3rd Cape Town International Summer Music Festival

The first week of the 2008 International Summer Music Festival in Cape Town


Week One:

Festival Concert 1: Symphony Concert
Date: 20 November 2008

The soloists are the celebrated cellist Gary Hoffman and the young South African pianist Tinus Botha. The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Arjan Tien and works performed are Stefans Grové’s piano concerto “Raka”, Lalo’s Cello Concerto and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (the latter performed with the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra).

Festival Concert 2: Recital
Date: 21 November 2008

A recital by Gary Hoffman, one of the outstanding cellists of our time and 1986 winner of the Rostropovich International Competition. He is accompanied by Elna van der Merwe (piano), one of the most popular chamber musicians amongst professional instrumentalists in South Africa.

Festival Concert 3: Choral Concert
Date: 21 November 2008

The Libertas Choir under conductor Johan de Villiers performs Rachmaninov’s extraordinary choral composition “All Night Vigil” - widely regarded as the pinnacle of Russian Orthodox church music.

Festival Concert 4: Piano Recital
Date: 22 November

Jill Richards, arguably South Africa’s foremost performer of new piano music, performs works by Eric Marty, Liszt, Messiaen, Henry Cowell, Debussy, Casella, Kurtág, Chopin, Howard Skempton and Schumann.

Festival Concert 5: Choral Recital
Date: 23 November

The Libertas Choir under conductor Johan de Villiers performs Rachmaninov’s extraordinary choral composition “All Night Vigil” - widely regarded as the pinnacle of Russian Orthodox church music.

Festival Concert 6: Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Concert
Date: 23 November

The Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra under conductors Alexander Fokkens and Brandon Phillips perform Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” Suite and other works.
