If you’d like to spend a day in the 1800s, while still enjoying some modern-day delights, then hop on board the steam train to the Elgin Railway Market on Saturday 12 or Sunday 13 January 2019 and every Saturday thereafter.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Ceres Rail Company's revived and restored steam train departs Cape Town from the Royal Cape Yacht Club in the Cape Town harbour at 8am. It arrives at 11am at the newly established Art Deco and Art Nouveau-inspired Elgin Railway Market.
Spend 3.5 hours browsing, perusing and tasting a delectable selection of eats and drinks at the market to the sounds of live music. There's a play area and a climbing wall for kids, making it great for families. Depart from Elgin at 2:30pm and enjoy the relaxing train journey back to Cape Town where you’ll arrive at about 5:30pm.
TICKETS TO THE CERES RAIL COMPANY AND ELGIN RAILWAY MARKET
Check the schedule and book your train ride online at Ceres Rail Company. Train tickets cost R750 per adult and R500 per child, while infants under two years of age ride for free. Goods at the market are priced individually and you can also drive to the market if you miss the train. For more information, contact the organisers directly on bookings@ceresrail.co.za or 079 077 5332.

Enjoy fresh food at a country café, go apple picking or stay over: there’s plenty to do at Cheverells Farm.
Get bargains and local food at the Muizenberg Flea Market.
Eat international cuisine of the lawns at The Melting Pot in Elgin.
Picnic on the lawns to the sounds of jazz at the Kirstenbosch Craft & Food market.
Take a look here if you're interested in exciting markets closer to home.
Or if you're interested in day-trips to other markets outside of Cape Town, give these a try.
But if you're excited for something a little more edgy, a little wilder, try this canopy tour in Elgin.
Looking for something new to shake your day up a bit? There are plenty of new and interesting things to do around Cape Town you might never have heard of.
