How to celebrate Easter in Cape Town

Inspired ideas, from an outdoor circus show + movie to an egg hunt

Between laughing through a circus show, taking the family for an Easter stay-cation, sleeping under the stars or preparing an Easter Sunday feast at home, it will be hard to decide what to do first over the Easter weekend in and around Cape Town.

Hermanus' art scene is active and there's always something fun and creative going on. Like the Mad Hatter's Tea Party this Easter weekend, fun for the whole family. There'll also be an exhibition of ceramic teapots, jugs, saucers, cups and mugs. And if you want to make a weekend of it, go on Friday to experience the Art Walk in the evening on First Fridays.

Date: 2-5 April
Price: Free - R250. To make a booking, visit the FynArts event page.

When you book a stay at Whale Rock Luxury Lodge for an Easter weekend getaway, you can stay for three nights, but you’ll only pay for two. Children will love the giant pool and open garden, while for couples looking for some privacy, the beautiful private villa will do very nicely. It has an open braai area and its own pool with rooms overlooking the ocean and the garden of Whale Rock Luxury Lodge

Date: The special will run from 2 - 5 April
Price: R825 - R4 420 per room per night

Why not celebrate Easter with an outdoor show where you’ll see a whirlwind of flying acrobats, aerial silk artists and hilarious clowns at the Outdoor Easter Circus Show? There also will be an Easter bunny (who will remain firmly on the ground) for the kids to meet and greet. Families are invited to bring their own blankets but can snack on drinks and light meals from the on-site food truck at the Milnerton Riding Club.

Date: Friday, 2 April - Monday, 5 April
Price: Single and group tickets range between R160 - R700. You can purchase your tickets online via Quicket.

Pack your bags and dust off your hiking boots for a 3-day camping trip over Easter weekend. The TrailFitSA leaders will take you to the depths of the rocky Cederberg mountains, in Clanwilliam, to see ancient rock paintings and swim in a waterfall (don’t worry, you’ll be back before Easter family dinner). The route you’ll follow is relatively easy, with plenty of opportunities to catch your breath, have a swim or soak up some Cederberg Wilderness views at TrailFitSA’s Waterfall Camp

Date: 2 - 4 April, 1pm - 4pm
Price: R2 250pp, you can book your spot by emailing

It’s fitting to watch the blockbuster hit film Peter Rabbit on Easter, and the Galileo Open-Air Cinema Drive-in is putting it on as a special screening at Cape Town High School, in Gardens. Pack in some blankets with a few snacks and park your car and the little ones in for a night of the naughty rabbit’s hilarious antics. Heads up: you don’t have to wait till Easter to watch a drive-in movie. There’s a new movie playing every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Galileo open-air cinema.

Date: 4 April, 6pm - 7:30pm
Price: R250 - R450, depending how many people per car. You can book your tickets online via

Get out of the bustling city and relax with the family at Knorhoek Wine Farm in Stellenbosch for an Easter getaway. As an Easter treat, there’ll be welcome drinks on arrival, full farm-style breakfasts and decadent dinners with sirloin steak, wagyu beef and seared kingklip. Sunday will be all about the little ones with a host of activities including tennis, swimming, fishing, hiking and, of course, a giant Easter egg hunt with a visit from the Easter Bunny himself. While the kids play, parents can enjoy a wine tasting and a cheese platter as well as a sundowner picnic on the lawns.

Date: 2 - 5 April
Price: R990 per adult per night, children between the ages of 4 and 12 years pay R520 each, and children under 4 stay for free
