New to Cape Town: Royaltea bar serves premium teas and other treats
Crumbs & Cream in Sea Point
Indulge yourself at this new decadent dessert parlour serving ice cream sandwiches and more
Wanting to do something together that would make people happy, Israeli sisters, Or and Shahar Peled decided to step up the local dessert game bringing to the Mother City a treat that can only be described as sweet genius. The Ice Cream Sandwich.
What started as an unassuming tuk-tuk at the V&A Waterfront has now developed into a brand new dessert shop on Regent Road in Sea Point dedicated to the melt-in-your-mouth delight. The ice cream sandwich sees a scoop of the finest creamy Italian Gelato squished between two of Or and Shahar’s freshly baked cookies – their own personal recipes, finished off with various spreads and toppings of your choice. Created for everyone to enjoy, Crumbs & Cream offers a wide variety of sweet goodies – including banting, dairy-free sorbet, gluten and sugar-free options, and are constantly creating new and exciting treats to add to the mix.
With a key focus on maintaining the nostalgic ‘sandwich experience’, each ice cream sarmie is served in a little brown paper bag and is created using two cookies that are not too hard or too soft but are perfectly moist and crumbly, making the sweet treat easy to eat and not too messy.
The little Sea Point store is pretty. With its large windows and colourful, fun interior, the dessert eatery is inviting and playful – everything that you want an ice cream parlour to be. There are no formal tables and chairs inside, except for a large cushioned bench by the street-facing window and two swing chairs – they are literally swings – accompanied by a few small coffee tables. The only other furniture in the shop is the large counter situated at the back of the shop displaying all of the yummy goods on offer.
In addition to the ice cream sarmie, customers can also choose to have the store’s Gelato ice cream or sorbet in a cone or cup – one, two or three scoops and similarly, cookies can be bought in singles or in boxes of 10. Drink options include a variety of coffees and teas, hot chocolate and slush puppys. Look out for their coffee and cookie (straight from the oven) special – ideal for morning spoils.
What’s more, the Crumbs & Cream staff members are all very friendly and super helpful. They are always willing to give you advice on which flavours pair well together as well as to ensure that you taste every variety on their delightful menu before you order!
Crumbs & Cream’s Ice Cream Sandwich: A Step-By-Step Guide
STEP 1: Pick Your Cookie(s)
You can either choose one type of cookie or mix it up with two different cookie flavours. Freshly baked every day – you can see (and smell) the cookies in the oven behind the counter, customers can choose from 14 different biscuits such as red velvet, chocolate brownie, rainbow, chocolate chip, Oreo, mint and more. What’s more, perfect for those on the Tim Noakes diet, the Sea Point haunt also offers a banting cookie – a deliciously soft (it is not as crumbly as the other cookies) sugar and gluten-free creation made with coconut as well as a vegan-friendly (egg and butter-free) option.
STEP 2: Pick Your Spread(s)
Think of your spread as the butter on your sarmie. You are welcome to choose two different spreads, one for each underneath of your chosen cookie. Spread options include Nutella, peanut butter and dulce de leche. All spreads are sold in-store and are subject to change.
STEP 3: Pick Your Ice-Cream
Although sadly you can only pick one scoop, Crumbs & Cream encourages all of their sweet-toothed fans to taste every ice cream flavour before ordering! There are 16 creamy delights to choose from – flavours on display change daily – such as choc mint, Ferrero Rocher, wild berry, Snickers, caramel fudge, rum and raisin, strawberry cheese cake, French vanilla and more. There is also a sugar-free (sweetened with xylitol) as well as a vegan sorbet (diary-free) option.
STEP 4: Pick Your Topping(s)
Pick from Astros, chocolate shavings, mini Smarties, cookie dough and more and add them into your ice cream sarmie. Toppings will change weekly so there will always be new and exciting add-ons to look forward to and try!
STEP 5: The Ice Cream Sandwich
Now that you have made your selection, all you have to do is sit back and let the magic that is the ice cream sandwich unfold in front of you. And then simply, enjoy!
NOTE: Crumbs & Cream also has a tuk-tuk situated at the V&A Waterfront serving their delectable ice cream sandwiches and more. Look out for specials and limited editions available at both the Waterfront tuk-tuk and Regent Road store.
Tip: The Crumbs & Cream tuk-tuk can also be hired out for special occasions and events. Customers can also order (at least 24 hours in advance) takeaway freezer ice cream sandwiches (ideal for children’s parties and dinners).
