12 Caves to Discover in Cape Town and Surrounds

Go and explore these mysterious dens, they make for great Instagram shots too

Caves are intriguing: You’ll find them along hiking trails, where they become the pitstop for a well-deserved break. Where the mini-gas stoves and coffee flasks come out, from where you can enjoy amazing sunset views, or just marvel at the ancient rock art. The hidden gems we’ve found for you below are caves that hold history, mystery and exciting discovery.

Stadsaal Caves (Cederberg)
A real wonder of nature, these caves contain khoisan rock art, a phenomenal sight to see that’ll temporarily transport you to a simpler time. You’ll need a permit to visit that can be obtained from Algeria Forest Station, Cederberg Oasis or Mount Ceder. These caves are quite a drive from Cape Town, over 2 hours, so make a day out of it!

Waenhuiskrans Caves (Arniston)
A roadtrip to Arniston, which is about 3 hours away, is not complete until you’ve been to this seaside cave. It’s not difficult to find with a path allocated to getting to the cave and the reward: overlooking marvellous views of the ocean.

Watchman's Cave (Lions Head, Cape Town)
The perfect spot for a sunset hike, this cave showcases views of Signal Hill and surrounds and is not difficult to reach either.

Klipgat Caves (Gansbaai)
Just 170km from the city is the historical site where hunter gatherers once inhabited. Stone tools and human remains were found in this cave and proves that people lived in this area about 70 000 years ago. This cave holds so much heritage significance, it should definitely be on your bucket list!

Keen explorers will have a field time, as the cave tunnels passes through the mountain. You may encounter bats in the cave and require a flashlight to make your way through to the other side. You’ll find this cave along the Echo Valley hiking trail.

Elephants Eye (Silvermine)
Go for a fairly easy hike, just under 8km, and you’ll find this cave along the path which is a popular spot amongst Capetonians. Bring the kids along and have a picnic in the cave while gazing over False Bay.

Muizenberg Cave
If you’re looking for the best view for sunrise, Muizenberg Cave should be on the top of your list! The hike to this cave starts at the Bailey’s Kloof trail on Boyes Drive.

This cave is one of the biggest caves on Table Mountain, so why not bring your friends along and turn the hike to this cave into a breakfast party along the slopes of Devil’s Peak.

Lookout Cave (Chapman’s Peak)
Ditch watching the sunset at Signal Hill and take to the trails of Chapman’s Peak for an incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean.
