Bruleed French toast to audacious cocktails at Honey + Dora
Last updated: Tuesday, 16 May 2023
The Cum in My Pants cocktail, bobotie cupcakes and a jungle bar are just some of the curious findings at Honey & Dora, a new all-day cafe in De Waterkant. From the moment you walk in you are confronted with bold colours and intricate details, celebrating the LGBTQ+ heritage of the neighbourhood.

Honey & Dora celebrates both the LGBTQ+ heritage of De Waterkant and owner JP van Huyssteen’s family heritage. The name stems from Gayle, an English- and Afrikaans-based gay slang. “Honey” means food and “Dora” means drinks. Customers can learn more about it with the short Gayle guideline on the food menu.
There’s an entire wall dedicated to photographs of queer icons, from Freddie Mercury to Lady Gaga. And you can’t miss the bookshelf filled with the owner’s 3-generation sewing machines, stemming back to his great grandmother.
If you ask JP, he will tell you the in-depth story behind the sewing machines and flowers. Image: Honey & Dora
There’s a little bit of everything at Honey & Dora, from a classic boere brekkie and bruleed French toast (with maple whipped butter) to old fashioned burgers. You’ll even find curious items like bobotie cupcakes (served with tomato chutney) and the mac and cheese burger, served with 3 deep-fried mac and cheese balls on top. It’s also a great spot to grab your early morning coffee with a rusk to go.

The sunny veranda and jungle bar creates a vibey atmosphere for drinks with friends. It’s cleverly located between offices, just outside the city centre, and has a fun cocktail menu to play around with. Try the Out and Proud with pineapple, Aperol and gin or Cum in my Pants with vodka, peach schnapps, cream and raspberry liqueur.
It’s also a great place to host your own event. In the back corner is a small private lounge with mirror balls, a perfect little nook for poker games, birthday brunches or bachelor/ettes.
There are also beers, wines and milkshakes on the menu. Image: Honey & Dora
