Where to Find the Best Ice Cream in Cape Town
The inside scoop on the top venues keeping Cape Town cool
Last Update: 17 May 2018
After a hard day’s tanning at the beach or a sweaty mountain hike, what better way to reward yourself than with a refreshing ice cream? Find the perfect accompaniment to a hot Cape Town day at one of these chilled haunts.
Experience options of artisanal ice-cream at the V&A Waterfront
The V&A Food Market offers a double scoop of artisanal ice cream delights. Unframed and The Creamery, two of Cape Town’s trendiest ice cream parlours, are both located at this artisanal street food market, in the equally cool Old Power Station Building. It’s a great place to grab a scoop or two and then wonder along the Waterfront walkway or enjoy the mountain views from the outside terrace or the atmosphere inside this historical building. Either way, you’ll be spoilt for choice and will probably come back a few times, especially on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays when the market offers free live music from 1pm to 4pm.

Cookies and Cream
This is a place where you can get ice cream with all the trimmings and more! It is not to be confused with Crumbs & Cream, a separate ice cream spot in Sea Point. Cookies and Cream serves its American-style ice cream in a diner-style shop. You can have the ice cream in a simple cup or cone; or you can go all out and order it sandwiched between two soft and chewy cookies, or stuffed into a bubble waffle ‘cone’. And let’s not forget the extra razzle dazzle you can add on top: hundreds and thousands, oreo cookies, and butter caramel sauce to name but a few.

This pretty, golden-interiored gem sits on Long Street and has some of the tastiest authentic Italian gelato and sorbet. Its sorbets are made with local seasonal fruit, and all ingredients are fresh and, as Moro Gelato puts it, “Real food”. No preservatives, artificial flavouring or gelatin here. The ice cream itself comes in a range of decadent flavours, both classic and unique. Try the Milk Tart, the creamy Pistachio, or the Pinocchio - a toasted pine nuts gelato. The sorbets include Mango and Fico (black figs sorbet), and of course there are various chocolatey gelatos. This includes a rich vegan chocolate, that tastes too wonderfully creamy to be true.

Crumbs & Cream in Sea Point
Sitting on Sea Point’s Regent Road, this little decadent dessert parlour is dedicated to one thing and one thing only: The Ice Cream Sandwich. The sweet creation sees a scoop of top-quality Italian Gelato squished between two freshly baked cookies and topped off with various yummy garnishes and sprinkles. Choose from 14 types of cookies, 16 ice cream flavours, and a huge selection of toppings. Banting (sugar and gluten-free made with coconut) and vegan-friendly cookies (egg and butter-free) are available, as well as sugar-free ice cream (sweetened with xylitol) and vegan sorbet.
NOTE: Crumbs & Cream also has a tuk-tuk situated at the V&A Waterfront.

If you value ethical and sustainable production, you will love The Creamery, which has cafés in Newlands, Mouille Point and Claremont. Its tubs and spoons are biodegradable. Local ingredients are sourced to create its delicious creations. Classic favourites include Sea Salt Caramel, Rosetta Roastery Coffee and 65% Chocolate. It also boasts seasonal limited-edition flavours you’ll find nowhere else, like Naartjie Choc Chip and Cornflake Milk (the taste is so exact it’s uncanny).
Tip: Try The Creamery’s dreamy soft, warm cookies or crispy waffles, topped with a cold scoop or two.

Head to one of Gelato Mania’s stores dotted around Cape Town for a homemade ice treat. It caters for a multitude of requirements, including kosher, Halaal, lactose-free, banting and even diabetes-friendly! Gelato boasts more flavours of gelato in one gelateria store than any other in South Africa! Popular flavours include Mango, After Eight mint, Chocolate Hazelnut and Bar One.
Tip: there are also pancakes and waffles available, which are served with a scoop of your choice flavour on top – now that’s decadence.

The famous Häagen-Dazs melt-in-the-mouth texture is created by whipping a small amount of air into fresh cream. There are plenty of dreamy flavours to choose from, but we've got a sweet tooth for Belgian Chocolate and the Blueberries and Cream (made using real blueberries!).
