Healthy, suckling and hanging out with mom
Aquila Private Game Reserve has proudly announced the birth of a baby rhino. The cute calf, born on 30th of January 2011 at 18:30, is said to be doing well.
Already home to a large variety of game and the rest of the Big Five, the herd of six rhino now comprises of three adults and three babies. The first baby was born on 27th February 2005, while the third addition to the rhino brood is healthy, suckling and enjoying getting to know their new mom in the wild.
The birth comes as a welcome surprise amidst suspected poaching activities in the area. After seeing choppers flying dangerously low at the end of 2010, owner Searl Derman has upped security measures to keep his rhino safe. He stated that the herd's new arrival will be protected by a 24-hour, elite team of anti-poaching security staff and will be monitored using night vision.
Searl added: "It's such a difficult time for the rhino, but while their future is threatened due to the expense of protection and conservation we have spared no expense in our efforts to protect the herd."
