Play the Amazing Race game in Cape Town at HintHunt

People love HintHunt for their brain-bending escape rooms (they recently won Best Adventure Experience in the Best of the Cape Awards) and their Amazing Race is just as exhilarating.

Just like the TV series, groups of four to 100 people (year-end, anyone?) race from checkpoint to checkpoint as they navigate comical, thrilling, and puzzling tasks. The premium experiences even include real physical challenges like kayaking and cocktail mixing.

HOW DOES THE AMAZING RACE WORK?

The game starts at the HintHunt homebase in the Watershed, where teams get different colour bibs and choose a leader to man the phone.

Each checkpoint requires your team to search for clues and solve puzzles to speedily complete the challenge that moves you to the next location. You’ll see families running towards their next clue, while coworkers deliberate over which route to take.

Make sure to wear sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable clothes and shoes, because there will be some running (especially if you are competitive). You’ll also need at least 50MB of data as the leader will use it to navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint.

PLAY AROUND THE V&A WATERFRONT

Depending on the speed of your team, races take anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes to complete, which actually whizzes by quite quickly. Street Arts, Wheely Wild, and Heritage Hustle are the three standard routes you can choose from (there are also two premium routes).

In Street Arts, the first clue starts you off in the Watershed craft market. You’ll be dashing in and around the Waterfront, and linger at certain points to study monuments and statues that hold the answer to your challenge. This one takes up to an hour (the shortest option). Try to stay alert as it’s easy to miss some of the clues when you’re racing around.

SEALS, HISTORY & THE CAPE WHEEL

Wheely Wild and Heritage Hustle are the longest races that aren’t in the Premium categories (they can last up to 90 minutes).

For Wheely Wild, teams explore the Waterfront’s marine life, where they will come across seals and seabirds and stop at the iconic Cape Wheel.

Heritage Hustle is about unpuzzling the past through the Waterfront’s historic landmarks. You’ll learn about South Africa’s history and famous figures and spend time in the Silo District.

KAYAKING & COCKTAIL MIXING

In Premium and Premium Plus Amazing Races the checkpoints have real physical challenges, like kayaking or SUPing on the Waterfront canals, and a challenge on the Cape Wheel. As with the standard routes, you can play with four to 100 people,  which lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.

Or go all out with a Premium Plus race, which includes all the Premium challenges as well as cocktail mixing and beer pulling, and can accommodate up to 100 people too. This one also takes 60 to 90 minutes.

And if that's not thrilling enough, HintHunt can even modify any route or extend the game at an additional cost. Are you up for the challenge?
