The 2016 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), hosted by Rwanda, has already got underway with qualifying matches taking place around the continent. Bafana Bafana will face off with Mauritius at the Anjalay Stadium (Mauritius) on Sunday, 5 July 2015 at 1pm, in the second leg of the qualifiers.
South Africa is one of 12 teams in the Southern Zone. Only three teams from this zone can qualify for the tournament. Bafana Bafana beat Mauritius 3-0 in the first leg of qualifiers on Saturday, 20 June 2015.
The final round of CHAN 2016 will take place between Saturday, 16 January and Sunday, 7 February 2016, with 16 teams taking part. Unlike the African Cup of Nations (AFCON), the teams who qualify can only consist of players who play in their domestic leagues. So, only players who play for the South African Premier Soccer League can be part of the Bafana Bafana squad. Both tournaments, however, are biennial events that run in consecutive years (so 2015 saw AFCON, 2016 will have CHAN, 2017 will have AFCON and so on).
Although no games will be played in Cape Town (or South Africa) for the remainder of this tournament, we have an awesome list of places you can go to watch the games in our beloved city. Alternatively, if you’re desperately yearning for some real life soccer action, Ajax Cape Town will be hosting the Cape Town Cup at the end of the month.
