It all began in 2011 with a black cat. In fact, it was a black cat animal costume worn by Ole Ohm – founder and creative mind behind aFREAKa Clothing, who was a slightly zany German traveller – this black cat onesie journeyed across South Africa.

From driving and shopping, to fishing and hiking, Ole toured across the Rainbow Nation wearing his animal onesie.

Never did he take it off and not once did its warmth, practicality and comfort fail to impress him.

At first, Ole was surprised by the interest he received from people who were not only intrigued by his unique one-piece suit but also wanted to know where they could purchase such an item. Realising he was onto something, Ole took the initiative and founded aFREAKa Clothing in the Mother City as a premium onesie supplier.

Now operating both as an online shop – they offer FREE shipping nationwide for orders of R350 or more – and as a retail store at Canterbury Studios in Gardens; aFREAKa offers the largest range of onesies in South Africa, selling and delivering their products to anyone, anywhere in the country (and even the world!).

With a key focus on excellence and authenticity, each aFREAKa onesie is designed and produced locally using only the highest quality materials available. Furthermore, each one-piece suit is handmade, ensuring that no two onesies will ever be identical and therefore 100% unique to its owner.

Believing in the philosophy that everybody should be whatever (or whoever) they want to be – even if it is for a short while – aFREAKa offers their clients the rare opportunity to explore and discover their inner freak. “Wearing one of my onesies can change your life. It is quite an experience because people look at you differently. Some think you’re crazy, others think you are cute but at least everyone is smiling because there is a little freak inside of each of us,” chuckles Ole.

There are many different types of aFREAKa onesies to choose from: there are fun and imaginative animal and character-inspired onesies, to the colourful and sporty INYE – which means ‘one’ in Xhosa –  onesies.

aFREAKa’s animal onesies are made from top quality polar fleece – which will never stretch or spoil through machine wash – making them super comfortable and easy to wear. Practical and stylish, the animal onesies are designed to be worn by people of all ages (adults and kids) and are finished with front stud buttons and side pockets. With over 100 different animal designs you’re sure to find a design to match your personality. Think chickens, cats, elephants and lions. Character-inspired onesies like the ‘Blue Donkey’ inspired by Eeyore and the ‘Doberman’ from Scooby Doo are available too, to name but a few. There is an aFREAKa onesie for absolutely everyone!

Realising though that the animal suits may not meet everyone’s onesie needs, aFREAKa developed their INYE range. These onesies are more fitted and sporty, and they are available in various colours and sizes. aFREAKa’s INYE onesies cater to both adults and kids and are made from 100% cotton, making them extra comfy. Complete with a full-body zipper and front kangaroo pouch-style pockets, there are a whole bunch of these quirky yet convenient designs to choose from.

What’s more, if you can’t find your favourite TV character or superhero in the mix, don’t stress! Customers are more than welcome to forward their ideas and pictures to aFREAKa and they will gladly customize your onesie. Not to mention, all onesies can be personalized with whatever you want, making the aFREAKa onesies ideal for gifts! As Ole says, “Anything goes. That is what we tell everyone.”

In addition to their extensive onesie range – and for those who relate to the aFREAKa philosophy, but not so much the onesie – aFREAKa also offer a wide range of stylish streetwear. Items include animal hats, Flexfit & Yupoong caps, jerseys, unisex tracksuit pants, vests and tank tops. The latest addition to the aFREAKa collection is the oh-so-popular Papsac, which is a portable air-sofa. Yes, a portable air sofa! Ideal for music festivals where tent-living is a thing, the Papsac inflates without a pump, and folds away to the size of a small backpack. The best part? aFREAKa’s Papsac even floats on water, giving your outdoor experience that much more swag!
