Heated Pools and Natural Springs

Swimming doesn’t need to be a summer activity!

Last updated: 19 May 2017

With winter fast approaching, or having already arrived (it depends on which day it is really), Capetonians have had to kiss their summer activities goodbye. Wine festivals, sunny excursions to outdoor markets and days spent lounging on the beach are reserved for November through February. The cooler months are perfect for indoor exploring, reading works by amazing local authors or having some delicious hot chocolates at various Cape Town locations.

Swimming is usually synonymous with summer, but we are here to let you know that it doesn’t need to be! We have an overview of Public Swimming Pools in Cape Town, and this winter we thought we’d try to keep you all in the water. Say hello to the best list of heated pools and natural springs in and around the Mother City. You can thank us later!

Long Street Baths and Turkish Steam Bath
The building that houses the Long Street Baths is over a century old, so imagine our excitement when we found out it contained one of the only heated government pools in the city! The stunning 1908 building has been updated so the interior boasts stunning facilities and plenty of space to have fun in the heated water. The Turkish Baths have a sauna, heated mini pools and even massage capabilities. Discrete individuals needn’t worry as there are separate sections for males and females respectively. You can comfortably enjoy a session in the sauna without having to see or reveal anything you aren’t comfortable with. The facility is fully functional, incredibly clean and totally accessible. For an inner city winter swimming destination, head to the Long Street Baths for a little dip!

The Baths Hot Springs in Citrusdal
Citrusdal is only two hours outside of the city, and it fulfils every want in terms of a relaxing weekend break. The stunning landscape will have you wanting to stay forever, and the hot springs will keep you warm in the winter months. The Baths, along with a heated and unheated swimming pool, boast some of the most secluded springs on this list. Their rockpools are hidden up in the mountain, framed with trees and surrounded by natural waterfalls. It sounds picturesque, right? This place is a favourite for weekend travellers so make sure you book your spot in little piece of paradise well in advance!

Warmwaterberg Spa near Barrydale
Located on Route 62, which runs from Montagu to Oudtshoorn, Warmwaterberg Spa is another stellar example of a natural spring. The self-catering accommodation on site is fantastic; their chalets are homely and warm, perfect for the winter months. Like we have said before - swimming doesn’t need to be a summer activity and something about the name Warmwaterberg Spa tells that they pride themselves on the presence of hot water. Anyone fancy a dip?

The Caledon Hotel and Spa in Caledon
To most people, Caledon is just a stop off along the Garden Route (unless of course you live there, then it’s so much more than that). You may not know this, but Caledon is also the site of a large collection of mineral springs. These pools are charged with iron, calcium, magnesium, sulphate, sodium and more. The water is hugely beneficial, in fact natural springs have been used by humans for hundreds of years. The springs sit at around 65 degrees celsius, and they have a very distinctive brown colour, due to the high iron content. Take a trip out of the city and benefit hugely from the rejuvenating power of the water!

Avalon Springs Hotel and Spa in Montagu
The Avalon Springs Hotel and Spa in Montagu is another brilliant place to benefit from the healing powers of natural spring water. These springs have a very definitive historical link; on some of the rock faces near the springs there are Khoi paintings, showing us that this area has been used for hundreds of years. The water reaches the surface at around 43 degrees celsius, with the temperature varying depending on which pool (and the size of the pool) that the water surfaces through. Unaffected by the recent drought it is estimated that the water travels over 3km to reach the surface. The water is piped into the Avalon Springs Hotel and Spa pool as well as their treatment baths. This water is crystal clear with a nearly neutral PH level.

Montagu Springs Resort in Montagu
Montagu seems to be a hotspot for hot springs and we’ve got more info on yet another awesome place to enjoy the warm waters. Montagu Springs Resort boasts really lovely self-catering accommodation in the form of chalets and villas. The resort, along with the hot springs, also has hot and cold swimming pools, along with a pool that’s suitable for the kiddies. There are also other activities in the area, like various wine farms, a dried fruit farm and a protea farm. Spend a relaxing weekend out of the city, away from the crowds and enjoying the amazing mineral springs. Everyone needs a little rest and relaxation, Montagu Springs Resort will certainly deliver it!

If you’re travelling with a family, it’s important to find somewhere that suits everyone and that place is Calizdorp Spa in Calizdorp, near Oudtshoorn. The spa is located along Route 62, which has a wealth of exciting stops that you should make! The resort has plenty to keep everyone entertained; hiking trails, a game reserve nearby, naturally heated pools, caves (and bush paintings), fishing and various sports facilities. To placate concerned guest the baths are routinely cleaned and are a perfect way to relax for people of all ages.

ATKV Goudini Spa in Rawsonville
Rawsonville is only an hour outside of Cape Town, and boy is it worth a trip! Not only is the town itself charming, but the Goudini Spa is a stunning place to stay while you enjoy what Rawsonville has to offer. Along with their natural mineral baths, they have a selection of exciting activities. It’s also located along Route 62, so there will be wine in abundance and a spoil of different wines on offer! The mineral baths are the best way to go swimming in winter; the water is warm, rejuvenating and almost guaranteed to be beneficial to your health and/or happiness. The resort also offers a leisure centre with pool tables, tennis courts, mini golf, trampolines, and horseback riding. Their accommodation options are very diverse; you can check into one of the chalets, apartments or villas, or you can make use of their camping grounds if you prefer to sleep under the stars.
