For 30 years Capetonians (and visitors) have come together to celebrate New Year’s Eve at the V&A Waterfront, where traditionally over 200 000 gathered to watch fireworks displays at midnight – and made memories and pictures to be shared with everybody around the world.
However, this New Year’s Eve was no ordinary 31 December, and the V&A Waterfront found a way to keep Capetonians safe at home, yet together in spirit.
At 9pm tonight (January 6), for the last time the V&A Waterfront will shine the giant beam of light that can be seen by everyone throughout the city and the surrounding suburbs. The first Beam of Hope was shone on 31 December at midnight and the following days thereafter at 9pm for an hour.
The beam, which consists of 36 searchlights, lights up from the V&A precinct for an hour at midnight signals both the start of 2021 as well as hope for us all.
“We... hope everyone who sees it takes the time to contemplate on themes of compassion, solidarity, connection, inspiration, and collaborations we have been able to demonstrate and experience during a very uncertain period,” says David Green, CEO of the V&A Waterfront.
From your backyard, your hotel rooftop, promenade or balcony, we’d love to see your shot of the Beam of Hope and share with everyone in this city (and those hundred of thousands that we reach around the world).
Share your best shots with @capetownmag. Tag each post or video with #capetownmag, so we can re-share it: www.instagram.com/capetownmag (and tag @vandawaterfront). You stand to win a prize of one of two V&A Waterfront gift cards worth R2 500 each. Enter by doing this:
1. Capture the beam and share your shot on our Facebook page by tagging #capetownmag.
2. Answer this question: what is your hope for 2021?
3. Tag @vandawaterfront #capetownmag #JoyFromAfrica #OurLightOurHope in your post.
Winners will be announced after 6 January, 2021.
The V&A Waterfront has had a theme for each of the 7 nights. For New Year’s Eve it was reflection, for everyone to take time to reflect on hope we have been shown during trying times; 1 January was compassion, shown by the V&A tenants in helping to feed the City; 2 January was about solidarity, in preserving jobs for the SMME community; 3 January was for celebrating creativity and ingenuity; 4 January was for connection, how people have kept together while keeping distance; 5 January was Joy from Africa to the world, reflected in the V&A Waterfront’s festive decor; and Wednesday 6 January talks to hope; reflected in the Waterfront’s new food market, which will create work and skills sharing.
