10 Questions For: Sandi-lee Permall

This passionate makeup artist is an inspiration to all. Although she has been wheelchair bound since birth, Sandi-lee continues to do what she loves and is the creator of a make-up app called ‘Tempted by Make-Up’.

1. How would you describe what you do for a living?
I’m the author and creator of a make-up guide book and app called ‘Tempted by Make-Up’. The app helps make-up junkies keep up-to-date with the latest ever-changing beauty trends.

2. What is your most vivid childhood memory?
I’ve been disabled and wheelchair bound since birth. The first wheelchair I owned and the only one my family could afford was a manually operated one, which I found to be very difficult to manoeuvre. One day my physiotherapist told me that an anonymous donor had given me  a brand-new mechanical wheelchair and my life has changed ever since. Operating the new wheelchair is so much easier and as a result I’ve been more independent. To the anonymous donor, I can't thank you enough for your kindness!

3. If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
Only three people? Hmmm that's tough. Well, my boyfriend as well as my great-grandmother and my grandfather who have both passed away.

4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
‘Roar’ by Katy Perry. It's such a powerful song and conveys an empowering message.

5. How would you complete this sentence?  The South African cabinet should include a Minister of ___________
Finance. (Jokes)

6. What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
People think I am all quiet, but once you get to know me I'm like a talkative bubble waiting to explode. Haha!

7. What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?
It's SO beautiful and the people here are amazing too! Honestly, I can't say anything bad about this city, but I do wish the crime would stop. I don't feel safe and that is sad.

8. What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
I’ve definitely had to overcome the fact that I’m perceived differently. Just because I look different to able bodied people does not mean I’m fundamentally dissimilar.

9. What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
I’d love to travel abroad. I have never been overseas nor have I ever been on an airplane.

10. Which well- known South African personality would you hypothetically, without a doubt, be able to beat in a one-on-one dance-off and why?
No one, I can't dance. But if I could dance, I would say Michael Jackson. Okay, I guess he doesn't count - well then it has to be Chris Brown. He’s a good dancer.
