Get to know the author and the genius behind Tiger Bay the Musical making its world debut at the Artscape Opera House. It will run from the 20 - 27 May 2017. Make sure you get your tickets and embark on this musical journey of love, reconciliation and courage.
1. What motivated and inspired you to start your career in this industry?
An invitation from Michael Rennison, while I was directing a musical based on the life of Buddha, to come to London and enter the opera world.
2. My greatest fear is …
An empty theatre
3. The biggest lesson I have ever learned is…
Listen first. And then listen for what is not being said. And only then speak.
4. What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Write what you know; write, write and write. Do not be afraid of criticism; it is your greatest friend.
5. What is the first play that you ever wrote?
Savages for the 1982 Grahamstown Festival fringe. It’s a play about identity politics and indoctrination.
6. Have you ever experienced writer's block?
No.
7. What plays do you recommend?
King Lear.
8. Do you view writing as a kind of spiritual practice?
Writing about the human condition; who are we and what are we doing on this planet. And most importantly how do we relate to each other.
9. If you didn’t write, what would you do for work?
Become a professional golfer.
10. Where do you love visiting in Cape Town to either eat or relax?
Saigon for food; The Grande to relax.
