10 Questions For: Adelaide Potgieter

We get to know the Cape Town-based entrepreneur behind MadWorld, a diverse group of companies consisting of Cape Town-based creative communications agency – Mad Advertising,  The Bromwell Boutique Mall, Bread – a café boulangerie and deli, aMadoda Braai and The Royal Albert, amongst others.

1.  How would you describe what you do for a living?
I think. I dream. I imagine…and I get more than my hands dirty

2.  What is your most vivid childhood memory?
Setting eyes on the sea… and dropping my brother on his head

3.  If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
Never give a woman only three choices, never!

For me Jesus and Socrates; For the arts Chagall, Monet, Michaelangelo; For the beat Bach, MJ, Bono; For nations Madiba, Martin Luther King, Churchill; For daring Branson, Disney, Jobs; For being homegrown Whitey Basson, Desmond Tutu, Christo Wiese; For stories Shakespeare, Goethe, Dostoevsky! I clearly love big dinners!

4.  If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
The Final Countdown (Europe)…dadadada, dadadada,dadadadadadadada (Simon Cowell is probably the only person who will really like me!)

 5.  How would you complete this sentence?  
The South African cabinet should include a Minister of Electricity. I would have said power but we have too much of that already going around in that space!

6.  What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
That I’m 'Mad'!                                  

7.  What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?
Why specify honest, is it the weed that makes us… am I allowed to say that? It’s the MotherFreakinCity! The most beautiful place in the world! Everyone just shoosh, look around and say thank you God!

8.  What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
Fear itself! Though I walk through the valley of the shadow….! I haven’t overcome it yet, I face fear every day in thousands of ways, but I try to live each day to its fullest, mistakes and all. To look fear in the face and to not be afraid!

9.  What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
I want to take MadWorld to the world. I want to love more. I want to do more good. I want to break the negative tenets of class, wealth and race, every time I encounter it or I myself, am guilty of it.

10.  Which well-known South African personality would you, without a doubt, be able to beat in a street fight and why?
We do enough fighting in South Africa, don’t you think. I’d rather dance and sing 'Nkalakatha' in the street with Mandoza.
