Durbanville joins the Cape Town Festival

Durbanville joins the Cape Town Festival as they celebrate their first In Touch Community Festival

Durbanville is gearing up for great entertainment and fun when they host their Cape Town Festival In Touch community festival on Saturday 24 February 2007 at the Rust-en-Vrede Cultural Centre in Durbanville.

Highlights of the all-day free entertainment includes a headliner performance by the "Supersterre" winner, Shaun Tait who will share the stage with other local stars, like singing sister duo, Inique, bands Prodigal Son and We Three, and the Stellenberg High School's acapella group, Oxyde.

Local crafters, artists and vendors will
offer a variety of handmade toys, ceramics, cushions, paintings, and mosiacs as well as delicious homemade eats and treats at the many festival stalls.

Durbanville is the last of eight communities chosen to host CTF In Touch fests in the run-up to the main festival from March 3 to 24.

Selected top artists from Durbanville and the other seven host communities - Mitchell's Plain, Langa, Sir Lowry's Pass Village, Khayelitsha , Hanover Park, Ocean View and Atlantis - will have the opportunity of performing at the official Cape Town Festival.

The best local performers from each of
these communities will also compete for the judge's favour at the In Touch finals at the Baxter Concert Hall on March 24.

"The In Touch festivals aim to restore lost community pride as well as build local capacity in events management and marketing in preparation for 2010," says Festival CEO, Yusuf Ganief.

"Having the Finnish Embassy and the Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) on board as first time sponsors of the In Touch festivals as well as the Provincial government's Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, has been a huge help this year," says Ganief.

"The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport's support for the festival is motivated by its strategic focus to provide a platform for community based and youth organisations to showcase their artistic talent in the cultural industries," says provincial MEC Whitey Jacobs.

"The Festival continues to earn a reputation for promoting and exposing artistic expressions of the disadvantaged sector and has earned our trust as partners in the development of arts and culture. We are indeed delighted to partner the Festival in investing our social capital, our people and our artists specifically," says Jacobs.

Finnish Embassy spokesperson, Jesse Laitinen, says: "We wanted to unleash the creativity locked in Cape Town communities. Not only for the sake of entertainment, but to remind ourselves that creativity is also the source for solving any problems and overcoming difficulties. What other power creates something out of nothing! Let's celebrate it, everywhere!" she said.

So don't miss Durbanville's In Touch festival at the Rust-en-Vrede Cultural Centre, 10 Wellington Street, Durbanville, this Saturday 24 February. Free entertainment and fun for everyone!
