Andy’s Sushi Bar in Cape Town

Former V&A Waterfront sushi restaurant chef opens a new pocket-friendly sushi restaurant in Sea Point

Andy’s Sushi Bar, an intimate Asian eatery now open on Sea Point’s Main Road, may not be able to compete with Cape Town’s fish-focused big boys in look and feel, but when it comes to freshness, flavour and affordability, this tiny, simply adorned outlet certainly gives upscale outfits a run for their money.

This is, first and foremost, because the little, colourful restaurant is the brainchild of the gifted Andy Wang, a former sushi chef at the V&A Waterfront’s famous sushi restaurant (we can't mentioned names). Having left this swanky seafood giant to make a go of it on his own in mid-2013, the nimble-fingered Chinese native now brings his outstanding skill and passion for making maki, nigiri, sashimi, hand rolls and more to his new coastal venture (it opened in June 2013).

Needless to say, owing to the owner’s high-flying background, visitors to the modest spot can expect the same level of quality and creativity found at Cape Town’s leading sushi eateries, but at far more reasonable (and realistic) prices. Not to mention, the variety is a little more extensive and the waiting times much lower – Andy whips up everything chop-chop on order.

Because as Andy says “I can do everything sushi”, the menu includes both an assortment of standard favourites and a number of new creations he’s dreamed up: tasty options like the Boam (crumbed tempura prawns topped with avocado and chilli seared tuna), the Salmon Fire (salmon roses filled with chopped, spicy salmon dressed with chilli mayo and sweet soya sauce) and the filling 18-piece Line Fish Mixed Platter.

But sushi is not his only speciality; the talented chef also conjures up full-flavoured soups (like the spicy Tom Yum); seaweed and fish salads; crispy vegetable, chicken and prawn spring rolls; and mouth-watering noodle- and rice-based dishes.

All the portions are generous, all the ingredients are uber fresh and each and every serving is made with a good mix of expertise and enthusiasm.

“I want people to come back again and again,” exclaims Andy, who moved to the sunny shores of South Africa nine years ago. “I don’t want them to come and then say goodbye.”

And although customers might not frequent the haunt specifically for the ambience or décor – expect sparse, white tables and kitsch, colourful Asian streamers – they’re sure to return time and again for the rare opportunity to enjoy superior sushi that doesn’t empty the wallet.

Tip: The restaurant doesn’t have a liquor license yet, but guests are welcome to bring their own alcohol – Andy doesn’t charge corkage.

The Bill: As noted, prices are very fair. Smaller two- to eight-piece sushi plates cost between R21 and R79, platters range between R79 and R139, spring rolls go from R15 to R20, salads are priced from R59 to R79, soups cost R35 and noodles- and rice-based dishes average around R49. Importantly, the restaurant is also running a great opening sushi special and offering a 30% discount on all sushi, salads and spring rolls at least until mid-August 2013.

Note: Only cash is accepted at Andy’s Sushi Bar, so leave those cards at home.

Opening Hours: Monday – Sunday: 11am – 10pm
