Solo Studios: Intimate Art Encounters in Riebeek-Kasteel

Head down to the charming Riebeek Valley for a weekend of creative delight, which includes meeting the region’s artists, writers and photographers. You don’t want to miss the annual Solo Studios: Intimate Art Encounters festival in Riebeek-Kasteel.

Calling all art enthusiasts, collectors creators and curators for the Solo Studios: Intimate Art Encounters festival in the Riebeek Valley, which is back for its second year! Head out to the charming old town of Riebeek-Kasteel to meet with its resident creative crowd as they open up their homes and studios to exhibit their work from Friday, 11, to Sunday, 13 August 2017. Last year Solo Studios was such a success it sold out, and it certainly did not disappoint attendees – this is an art event that goes above and beyond with the unique experiences it offers.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR AT THE 2017 SOLO STUDIOS: INTIMATE ART ENCOUNTERS IN RIEBEEK-KASTEEL

16 FINE ARTISTS IN STUDIO
The intimacy begins as talented local Riebeek Valley painters, art curators, potters, sculptors and printmakers invite us into their home studios. Here, visitors will get a chance to chat to these creative individuals and see their portfolio of work, as well as buy pieces straight out of the studio.

Some of the artists who will be taking part in the event include Li Negpen, who draws inspiration from the expressive arum lily for her paintings, and self-taught potter Garth Meyer. Also meet Ivan Kirstein whose “rural graffiti” in multimedia is a sight to behold, and Tamlin Blake who questions the expected divide between fine art and the historically “domesticated” artforms of beadwork, weaving and sewing.

12 WRITERS
The Royal Hotel in town will host the Writer’s Studio, a new addition to the art festival. Stationed around the Studio will be renowned writers, authors, poets, literary critics, political commentators, journalists and illustrators who, like the fine artists, will be there for a chat – or a debate! – about their work, as well as topical issues. Or have a word with one of the wordsmiths. We know for sure that Joyce Kotze, author of The Runaway Horses, will be there, as well as poet and playwright Kobus Moolman, and Nigel Fox, author of A Bullet in the Back.

5 PHOTOGRAPHERS
Local Riebeek-Kasteel photographers will be showcasing their work in a group exhibition at Pictorex Photographic Gallery and Print Studio. What’s more, you’ll get to interact with them too.

Photographers showcasing their work will be:

  • William Walker            Landscapes
  • Mary Walker               Nature
  • Ivan Kirstein               Street photography
  • Rudolph Willemse       Contemporary art
  • Maree Louw                Lomography
  • Ad Goedhart               Portraits

Look out in particular for Ad Goedhart who specialises in portrait photography and who will be taking portrait shots of visitors over the course of the weekend. There’ll even be a makeup artist on ‘set’ (for women and men) to make sure you’re ready for your photos! Goedhart has created a stunning photo gallery of portraits of the 16 fine artists in various poses, which you can view on the festival’s website.

5 GROUP EXHIBITIONS
Five different galleries will play host to artists and writers for the weekend. Enjoy chats with your favourite creatives, meet the makers and artists, and maybe even find an art piece to buy for your own art collection. The participating studios are The People’s Gallery, RK Contemporary, The Gallery, Pictorex Gallery and The Writer’s Studio.

2 SPEAKERS
On the Saturday there will be a dynamic discussion at the Riebeek Valley Hotel. ‘Breakfast in Conversation with Max and Jacques’ will see political commentator Max du Preez and investigative journalist Jacques Pauw talking about important current issues in South African politics. Related to this is a talk on Pauw’s latest book, THE PRESIDENT’S KEEPERS: Those who keep Jacob Zuma in power and out of prison, which promises to be very interesting.
