Two friends had a dream that led to The Shred: An indoor skatepark and skating school in Cape Town. This accessible neighbourhood spot welcomes all ages and wheels, including skaters, rollerbladers, bikers, and BMX riders.
The Shred is the only public indoor skate park in Cape Town. Image: The Shred
Long-time friends and co-owners, Jamie O’ Brien and Marc Baker, opened The Shred and (literally) built it into what it is today. From being a run-down building in Paarden Eiland with half a missing roof, they designed the layout to include ramps, stair-sets, rails, a quarter pipe and the very popular skate bowl. They also built the skate ramps themselves.
This trendy indoor skatepark combines the best of extreme-sport culture and the local community. Image: The Shred
Now, all ages and wheels (like skates, rollerblades, scooters, and BMX bikes) can join the skating school or book a skating session.
Lessons are given by experienced skaters and are for beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels. Lessons can be done one-on-one or in groups of up to three people.
The Shred also has a coffee shop on site, with pizzas, burgers, treats, and coffee while the restaurant has weekly burger specials from Friday to Sunday (with vegan options).
A maximum of 30 riders are allowed in the park per session. Image: The Shred
The park is open every day of the week, including public holidays. There are daily three-hour sessions from 8am to 6pm. You could also opt for a double session (R160) or pay for an entire day (R200). Plus, almost every day of the week features a special.
On Mondays, skaters pay half-price for 3 hour sessions (between R40 to R50), R90 for double sessions and R120 for a full day. Open Night takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and welcomes all wheels to the park. These sessions happen from 6pm to 9pm at R50 per person.
Wednesdays are Skate Night (from 6pm to 9pm), where only skaters 16 years and older are allowed to join (R50). All sessions running from Tuesday to Thursday start at 6pm.
To top off The Shred experience, once a month VANS SA hosts a free ladies-only skateboarding evening. Dates vary each month so you’ll need to check their website or socials for updates.
Try and book your dedicated three-hour session in advance to avoid disappointment. Image: The Shred
If you want to make The Shred your next birthday party venue, you can rent out the entire park for private use or opt for a birthday room. With packages starting from R2 100, you can choose between Cheap Skate, Piggy in the Middle, or The Full Monty to suit your skating needs.
At an additional cost, you could also get a skateboard birthday cake or a professionally edited video of the party, along with other optional extras. For catering, riders and guests can order from the Eiland Eatery.
The team is on hand to provide a safe and enjoyable skating experience for kids. Image: The Shred
The Shred Skatepark is open: Monday, 8am to 6pm; Tuesday to Thursday, 8am to 9pm; Friday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm
