Upcycled Outdoor Gear Sealand Sets Up Shop In Waterfront

Eco-friendly, recycled and upcycled products adorn Sealand Gear’s walls

Started in Cape Town's southern peninsula in 2015, Sealand is now a globally recognised brand known for environmentally friendly bags and accessories made from old yacht sails, tents, advertising billboards and banners. The result? Understated yet hip looking and durable products created to help reduce environmental waste.

SHOP GLOBALLY RECOGNISED BRAND

Sealand is stocked across the world — UK, France, New Zealand and Japan — as well as in South African stores, but to really experience this ethical brand and its philosophy go to its own space at the V&A Waterfront, on Dock Road.

The space is stocked wall-to-wall with merchandise, all of which is made from upcycled waste materials. There are backpacks, T-shirts, duffle bags, caps, face masks, and surfboards adorning the downstairs walls. while upstairs, the large windows flood the store with natural light, giving a clear view of the canals and Cape Town's CBD. 

IT’S MORE THAN A BEAUTIFUL SPACE 

“We don’t believe in replacement but repair,” says Sealand’s store attendee Julia Kabwe. Instead, each item has a lifetime warranty and you are welcome to send in your product for repairs, even though the materials are made to be durable and weather-resistant. Take the buddy bag for example – their most popular item in store.

Between the buddy vintage, breeze, lava, retro, desert and flare you’re spoilt for choice, but the idea is the same. The bags are handmade in Sealand Gears workshop in Hout Bay with materials like advertising billboard banners for the inner lining, seatbelt straps for the handles and tent canvas protecting the outside of your bag.
