It’s all about seafood, sunsets and sushi at this wholesome West Coast eatery
It’s the simple things in life that are the most extraordinary: cracking the top of a crème brûlée, walking barefoot on freshly cut grass and sitting by a log fire in the throes of winter. For all its obviousness, it’s a truth that’s easy to lose sight of in our fast-paced, technologically driven world, but thankfully, there are plenty of places and people out there doing their best to remind us that everything doesn’t always have to be so darn complicated.
Blowfish Restaurant in Blouberg is one of those dear messengers. Perched just beyond the dunes of Dolphin Beach, the down-to-earth, family-friendly eatery is all about sunset, sushi and seafood. The triple whammy brings together three of life’s simplest and greatest pleasures, and the Blowfish serves them up without a stitch of fuss in its effortless sort of way.
Of sunsets and sundowner spots
For starters, sitting seaside just before the start of the rugged West Coast, the eatery boasts a view so beautiful that it’s reduced grown men to weeping babes. Okay, perhaps that’s a little dramatic, but from nearly every seat in the restaurant, diners can drink in a picture-perfect snapshot of Table Mountain stretched out in all its glory. During the day, a swarm of colourful kitesurfers decorate the skies that hang above, and at night, guests can peer out across the darkened waters of the bay at the glittering city lights that climb the flanks of Lion’s Head.
Best of all though, those who come during the lull between afternoon and evening can watch molten sunsets explode over the bay and a veil of champagne-tinged dusk fall gently from overhead. It’s the kind of easy indulgence that goes best with a drink in hand, and Blowfish has everything from fruity cocktails and local beer to French bubbly and Cape Winelands reds and whites.
Of seafood, snacky eats, steaks and more
Along the same lines, there’s just something special about smelling the sea breeze and staring out over a shimmering ocean while tucking into shellfish, calamari or linefish plucked fresh from those very waters only hours before. And at Blowfish, all the fruits of the Atlantic are on offer just metres from the shoreline.
The restaurant’s famous fish counter stocks delicacies like jumbo prawns, langoustines, crayfish and more, all of which are on display in an oyster shell big enough to have charioted Poseidon around in his underwater kingdom. Seafood lovers can build their own platter or simply have the fishmonger cut a piece of hake, yellowtail or more to order (the goods are charged on a pay-per-weight system).
And because the responsible eatery was among one of the first in Cape Town to be certified by the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative (SASSI), diners don’t have to feel guilty about stuffing themselves silly.
For those allergic to ocean-fresh fare, Blowfish dishes up good, wholesome nosh done simply and well: think juicy steaks, tasty pastas and succulent stuffed chicken breast. The food doesn’t put on airs and graces, and the chefs haven’t dressed up the dishes to be something they’re not. The presentation is matter of fact, and the portion sizes are generous, with the top-of-the-line produce and on-form preparation left to do the legwork.
Plus, as the restaurant’s keen for the entire clan to come for a meal, an interactive kid’s colouring menu with inclusions like chicken strips, calamari strips and fish ‘n chips is on offer too. So, the little tykes can refuel after expending some of that bouncy, trouncy energy on the trampoline, playground and on the large surrounding lawns. There’s even colouring pages, biscuit decorating and children’s books for the less rambunctious, as well as baby seats and a designated area that caters specifically to families.
Of sushi and sushi-making
And then, of course, there’s the fact that Blowfish has been doing sushi since samurais ruled over Asia with sharp swords and even sharper senses of honour. Okay, again, maybe that’s not exactly accurate, but the warm and welcoming West Coast joint has been serving up the Japanese specialty for years and years.
From a conveyor belt-style station in the centre of the eatery, guests can choose their own sashimi, nigiri, salmon roses and more. Though, there’s also a made-to-order menu that boasts inclusions with a little extra flair, like the Mountain Top, which is eight pieces of spicy minced tuna and avocado rolled up tight and topped with a tempura-style prawn, mayo and Chinese chilli paste.
The raw fish is also available for those dining tableside, and it’s worth pencilling the eatery’s half-price sushi special into the calendar. The discounted offer runs from 5pm to 8pm every Wednesday and Sunday.
Similarly, the restaurant offers sushi-making courses with its longtime sushi chefs. The classes cater to groups of 8 to 25 and make for great girls’ nights out, team-building exercises and birthday parties. Simply book in advance and get set to roll your rice and eat it too.

So, whether you’re keen to fill up after a surf, settle in for a romantic night, toast to dusk with good mates, break bread with the family or celebrate a special occasion, head to Blowfish Restaurant in Blouberg for an experience that’s, quite simply, something special.
Tip: Blowfish Restaurant also does wedding receptions. And as the eatery’s connected to the Dolphin Beach Hotel, the bride and groom are given complimentary accommodation and wedding guests get a discount on room rates.
The Bill: Suitable for nearly any budget. Breakfast options run from R29 to R89, the bistro lunch menu’s dishes ring in between R45 and R85 and dinner prices range from R70 to R155.
