Experience the work of legendary artist Sam Nhlengethwa at the current exhibition of his new work in Waiting at the Goodman Gallery in Woodstock until 1 December 2018 9:30am–4pm.

In this exhibition, Nhlengethwa poses the question: what are we waiting for? It appears obvious in certain works, but upon closer inspection, more questions arise. Who is doing the waiting? What qualities do these people share?

Over his several-decade career, Nhlengethwa has applied a signature style of collage incorporating painting and archival material to cover subjects such as cityscapes to jazz musicians, artists and political figures. Waiting actually features a collaged sepia photo of a young Winnie Madikizela-Mandela sitting in a brightly painted living room.

“When black and white creeps into the paintings it recalls the past. It is a form of worlds colliding,” says Nhlengethwa.

The Goodman Gallery is open Tuesday–Friday 9:30am–5:30pm and Saturdays 9:30am–4pm. The Waiting exhibition is running until Saturday 1 December 2018.
