Sorry Shakespeare, you don’t determine the fate of your famous star-cross’d lovers this time. Romeo and Juliet have other plans and the story they’re about to tell is rather different to the familiar Shakespeare one. This is what audiences can expect to see in the spoof stage production, Romeo and Juliet – Sort Of. An entirely different script has the characters from the classic tale going off script – with hilarious results. The play will be showing at the Galloway Theatre at the V&A Waterfront from Wednesday, 8 to Friday, 10 November 2017.
The production was written and directed by local thespians Michaela Richards and Robert Shenton, who will also play the characters of Juliet and Mercutio, respectively. Here, in Romeo and Juliet – Sort Of, they have explored the idea of Shakespeare as a god who has already laid out the characters’ destinies – except the characters want to rewrite their futures. The two are also the same witty brains behind other theatre parodies of cult classics. These include Dating, Mating and Relating for Dummies, a play based on the relationship self-help book, and The Woods, which tells of how the Grimm brothers fought over the Red Riding Hood story.
Four other characters from the original tale join Juliet and Mercutio in Richards and Shenton’s script, presented by a local cast. There’s Romeo, of course, played by Darren Rockman. Also featuring is Nurse, played by Tara Macpherson; Tybalt, played by Stavros Cassapis; and Squire, played by Daniel Rom.
