PechaKucha calls on inspired individuals, creative thinkers and thought-leaders to share their ideas or new projects with a group of open-minded audience members. Hosted at the Zip Zap Circus, this insightful gathering comes together on Tuesday, 1 November 2016.

Started by Tokyo-based architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham from Klein Dytham architecture in 2003, the event gets its name from the Japanese word for chit-chat. The original aim of these sessions was to create a space for young designers to meet, network, and showcase their work. Now, more than a decade later, the talks have become immensely popular, appealing to speakers and attendees from all walks of life and taking place in over 800 cities around the world.

Some of the topics at the edition of PechaKucha include ‘What is life in the circus really like?’, ‘Will drove sharks clean up our coastline?’, ‘How does an online-based band practice?’, and even ‘Can an entire short film be shot on a cell phone?’

IT’S TO THE POINT: Each presenter is given the chance to show 20 slides, each of which is displayed for 20 seconds. More specifically, nine individuals are given a total of six minutes and 40 seconds to speak about or showcase their passion project. The Tuesday talk provides the perfect opportunity for anybody that’s ever had a light bulb moment to illuminate the lives of others.

ANYONE CAN SPEAK: Though initially created to allow young designers to meet, showcase and network, PechaKucha has mushroomed in size and subject matter; these days anyone can present about anything, and most people talk about their passion or creative projects. These short, yet powerful presentations inspire people to be brave, to stop procrastinating and attempt something they’ve been dreaming about doing for ages.

NETWORKING SESSION: During the halftime interval (or beer break), audience members are encouraged to ask the speakers questions or further discuss the topics. This clever networking concept gives people from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to be exposed to new ideas, and after the presentations, visitors can mingle and interact with people they might not have met otherwise.

WANT TO SUBMIT AN IDEA?: Submissions are always open, and organisers sift through a slew of applications to pick the most inspiring, challenging and, for some, life-changing presentations. If you think you’ve got something you want Cape Town to know about or you simply want to school the masses, you can submit five visually arresting slides along with a 50-word description of your idea and apply to be a speaker on the PechaKucha website.  Speakers are notified at least three weeks prior to the event.

At the door on the evening of the event, entrance will cost R50p/p. If you book online via WeChat Mobile Wallet, entrance is free!
