Pear Tree, our favourite hidden bistro in Hermanus
Food just as light & fresh as the sea breeze
Last updated: Thursday, 22 January 2026
Pear Tree is the tiniest seaside bistro on one of the busiest stretches of Hermanus. Just by the Whale Tail Fountain, its menu, with dishes like breakfast tacos and sushi calamari, is as light and fresh as the ocean breeze rolling over its blue tables.
Pear Tree is for those who want something “healthy” that’s actually exciting, flavourful and fresh. Image: Pear Tree
FRESH LOOK WITH SEA VIEWS
You’ll find Pear Tree right next to the yellow frame on the Hermanus Waterfront, near the Whale Tail Fountain. Even though it’s the smallest spot on the strip, it’s buzzing.
The space has recently been renovated with earthy tones, soft lighting, and light blue bistro tables that sit outside under umbrellas, all facing the ocean so you can dine with sea views.

BREAKFAST TACOS & HEALTH SHOTS
Breakfast here is never heavy. Think breakfast tacos, filled with egg, chipotle pulled chicken, avocado and barbeque mayo. Or falafel toast, layered with hummus, crushed avocado, basil, cherry tomatoes, chimichurri and lemon.
It pairs well with their fresh juices and immune booster shot (orange, lemon, ginger, and turmeric).

MUST-TRY SMALL PLATES & MAINS
The inventive nature of the breakfast menu extends to lunch and dinner, with one of the bestsellers being the sushi calamari. The Patagonian calamari, stuffed with sushi rice, salmon, sesame seeds and nori, is a menu stalwart.
Otherwise, the root veg gnocchi with carrot purée, goat’s cheese, and root vegetables is another favourite, as is the kingklip and prawns with carrot and coconut cream, pickled ginger, lemongrass rice and spinach.
Drinks are best sipped outside, overlooking the ocean. There’s an impressive collection of local wines, cocktails, organic cold brew kombucha, and more.

EXPLORE HERMANUS AFTER YOUR MEAL
Because the food is light and satiating, it will leave you energised. Pear Tree is right by the Cliff Paths, so it’s easy to wander off for a walk after your meal. The path stretches for 12km from New Harbour to Grotto Beach.
And from there, the day can unfold easily; a hike through Fernkloof Nature Reserve, a visit to the Country Market, or a wine tasting in Hemel-en-Aarde Valley.
