#TANZMUSIK DJ Nights at Orphanage Cocktail Emporium

Smooth sounds and even smoother drinks punctuate Saturday nights at this whimsical bar

We love a Saturday night that casually rolls from sundowners into nibbles and then on into a bit of bobbing and swaying. Of course, you need the right backbeat to foster this sort of evolution, and Bree Street’s Orphanage has it spot-on with its smooth #TANZMUSIK set, which gets rhythm rippling through the body even if you’re just there for the potions.

Spun by German-born, Cape Town-based DJ JanuaryOne, the music moves between deep house, tech house and techno, and it’s known to turn Saturday nights at the bar into a proper party (listen to a set by JanuaryOne below to get a feel for his genre).

Tables in the interior of the moody venue get pushed aside to make way for dancing, but those who want to appreciate the sounds from a sitting position can still do so – there’s banquette seating inside, an open-air section for smokers (entitled the ‘Sin Bin’) and a tree-lined terrace that looks out on the vibrant happenings of the neighbourhood.

Trying at least one of the bar’s cocktails is a must. The speakeasy-style haunt, which has a 1920’s feel about it, is renowned for its masterful mixology and the artful presentation of its elixirs. Its signature drink is the ‘More Tea Vicar?’, which is made up of vanilla-infused vodka, rooibos syrup, cranberry juice and fresh lemon, and served in a vintage tea cup. Otherwise, there are a number of other whimsical concoctions as well as the classics, boutique wines and craft beer.

If the night’s going to progress and extend, you’ll probably need a few bites, and the venue’s got you covered with a number of tapas and small snacks – we recommend the fillet with Romesco pesto or truffle oil and pecorino.

Otherwise, you can rely on DJ JanuaryOne to carry you through to the early hours of the morning (the music goes on until 2am).
