Open Streets: Disrupting Woodstock Main Road

Come dance, ride, skate and perform, or just have fun at Open Streets Woodstock

Run, walk, skip, cycle or dance your way through Cape Town's busiest street this year as Open Streets is back and closing off Woodstock Main Road on 23 February to celebrate everything fun.
WHAT IS IT?
Inspired by a concept which first started in Colombia as Ciclovía, Open Streets aims to reclaim public areas and to create safe and interactive spaces in Cape Town that combat the social and spatial divides.

This popular, citizen-driven initiative, celebrates people and community, and will transform Woodstock Main Road into a festive, car-free and open access area for all.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
A various range of activities will fill the streets between Victoria Main Road and Roodebloem Road from music and dance cyphers, roller skating, martial arts demonstrations, free bike rides for the kids as well as a VR experience from Cape Town Tourism, which will give people the opportunity to view and experience Table Mountain, Aquila Private Game drive and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens through virtual reality headsets.

HOW TO GET THERE
Open Streets encourages everyone to leave their cars at home and instead use public transport, e-hailing apps or carpool to arrive.

Participants can also join the Bus-Bike system, an idea based similarly to a usual bus route, but pedal powered. Here, cyclists can join like-minded riders from starting points in Muizenberg’s Knead Bakery, Tableview’sTotal garage and Gugulethu’s Ikwezi Community Centre in a relaxed social cycling group.

If you do need your car, street parking is available at Roodebloem Road, Fairview Avenue, Mountain Road and Searle Street.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
Open Streets is a popular crowd favourite that has many people coming from all over Cape Town.

To make sure that everyone feels safe, Open Streets has a team of over 100 members along with Woodstock SAPS and the Woodstock Improvement District working together to make sure that everyone is happy and the event is a success.
