Stories and Treasures at the Noordhoek Art Gallery

The Art Gallery at the Noordhoek Farm Village is a treasure trove of photography and antiques

The Noordhoek Art Gallery shop focuses mostly on framing and black and white Matthew Cargill photographs. That is besides a permanent exhibition of works by South African sculptors. Yet the owner also has a keen interest in antique collectables and the shop is a trove of Venetian glass, Chinese porcelain and rare African treasures.

Depending on when you visit, you might find Ethiopian Coptic crosses made out of pewter, vintage hubbly bubblies, war shields from Borneo, old hand painted Chinese scrolls and even centuries old Japanese lacquer bowls. Once you start browsing you’ll find yourself wondering about the interesting stories that must lie behind each of the items in this store.

Imagine an original life sized Italian Pinocchio puppet right next to vintage candle holders, a selection of vintage Majolica character mugs and a Cote D'Ivoire Ceremonial Spoon. When you turn your head you spot ancient pottery and an Indonesian puppet from Java. Then there’s a large collection of ceramics, Luna Del Mar fossils as well as Old Lace and Love... made by Michelle Koch in Kommetjie.  If you like anything unusual you'll be the proverbial kid in a candy store. 

The Noordhoek Art Gallery specialises in photography, be it dramatic in black and white or in exquisite colour photographs by a number of famous South African photographers. Matthew Cargill, for instance, was commissioned by FIFA to take photos of the Cape Town Stadium and is the best selling photographer in the shop. Surprisingly, the prices are very affordable as Matthew frames his own work.
