Hailing from Khayelitsha, Nolitha Qhuma has created a name for herself in the world of design. The fashion designer and master seamstress has created a unique fashion brand – Rea ’Nubia – that embodies African authenticity. Her aim is to inspire her fellow peers to reach their full potential and live their purpose as she does.
1. How would you describe what you do for a living?
I'd say I'm an artist and an entrepreneur who is passionate about social development. With my work and life I aim to inspire confidence, boldness and a celebration of one's beauty.
2. What is your most vivid childhood memory?
I'd rather not share. All I will say is that the most vivid memories were the most painful; however they taught me strength and determination.
3. If you could invite any three people, dead or alive, for dinner, who would they be and why?
It would have to be my mother, father and sister. I'd also suggest the same invite in every household where kids are raised by single mothers (invite the mother, the father and the kids). I believe common grounds are necessary for the well-being of the children. It is not easy for these powerful women to pull off double jobs, fathers need to understand the importance of their role and play it.
4. If you ever found yourself auditioning for a music reality TV show, what song would you sing and why?
‘Young, Gifted and Black’ by Nina Simone. I feel that it is a message that our youth needs to hear, specifically the youth of our townships and Cape Flats where the rising challenges like drugs, alcohol addiction, crime, gangsterism, teen-pregnancy, illiteracy and worse - lack of vision, occur on a daily basis.
5. How would you complete this sentence? The South African cabinet should include a Minister of .
Children.
6. What would you say is the biggest misconception about you?
That I'm always strong.
7. What is your (honest) opinion of Cape Town?
It's a beautiful yet dark city. We have so many issues I feel should have been addressed by now.
8. What's the greatest fear you've had to overcome to get where you are today?
Fear itself – whether it's the fear of failure or whatever. I'd be lying if I said I've overcome it though. I rather manage fear because when it's properly managed it works to one's advantage.
9. What's the one thing you'd like to achieve before you die?
To help inspire people to realise their potential and live their purpose.
10. Which well-known South African personality would you, without a doubt, be able to beat in a one-on-one dance-off and why?
Haha, I'm thinking Loyiso Gola. I figure with him being tall and me being a short person dancing next to him he might just be the one to look more ridiculous, haha I think.
