Buy fresh produce, grains, health products and swap clothes, all plastic-free
Nude Foods’ offering just got better: The zero-waste and lifestyle store has opened the Apothecary, which offers ethically sourced, indigenous, natural wellness and health remedies. Shopping at Nude is a wholesome and rounded experience – besides the fact that all produce is plastic-free, you can also thrift-shop there.

Welcome to Nude Foods, the first plastic-free grocer in Cape Town. Image: Nude Foods
Paul Rubin founded Nude Foods in 2017 after reaching a breaking point with the excessive use of plastic at regular grocers. Since then, many Capetonians have followed in his footsteps, opting to give up pre-packed goods for a more hands-on, shopping experience, using paper bags and their own containers.

At Nude Foods, dry goods are decanted into either paper packets or the containers you bring, and then weighed. It’s a tactile way to shop, and gives you control over the exact amount you want.
Small batches are kept in jars to ensure fresh, quality products. Tip: smell the cinnamon jar! Image: Nude Foods
Pour rich and creamy tahini, golden honey and refreshing kombucha straight from the dispensers into your containers. Grind your own nut butters or fill your basket with fresh, seasonal, organic produce delivered straight from the farm. Or browse the home section for body products that cater for everyone. Your options are extensive. No fuss, no wastage and no pointless packaging. This is also an eco-brick drop off spot. For those not in the city, Newlands has another branch.

Start your day with locally brewed Kombucha, fresh and fizzy. Image: Nude Foods
Pop next door for a modern twist on an old-school apothecary. It has a warm and earthy atmosphere, and stocks tinctures, tonics, herbs and teas, or you can create your own product. Providing small batches of locally produced products supports both the environment and the community, and as Paul says, “This is a space for creation, collaboration and community.”

Fill your jars with an array of herbs, spices and other wellness goodies. Image: Nude Foods
Café Nude serves drinks that are blends of unique and intriguing ingredients that’ll keep you coming back for more. Try vegan iced lattes, artisanal elixirs, soothing hot drinks and superfood smoothies. Café Nude takes takes plant-based power to such an elevated level that even the hardest critics are willing to join the trend.
Still hungry for more? Wild Eatery food truck, parked outside of the grocer, offers a healthy and hearty menu. A must-try is the falafel wrap, voted the best in the world (according to Capetonians that is).

As the phrase goes, “one man's trash is another man's treasure”. Once a month, Nude Foods welcomes you to bring your pre-loved clothes to its Clothes-Swap Market. This is a fun give-and-take approach to thrifting, when you can swap something old for something “new”.

Donate up to 10 items in exchange for 10 more and pay only R50 participant fee. Image: Nude Foods
Nude Foods is open: Monday to Fridays, 9am - 5.30pm; Saturdays, 9am - 3pm, Sunday & Public Holidays: Closed
