The best videos of the Tulip Hotel implosion in Cape Town

Videographers got out of bed early to capture what happens when 100kg of explosives and one of Cape Town’s most little-known hotels have a run in

Add 100kg of explosives to an old building that was home to one of Cape Town’s most little-known hotels and put out the word you’re going to push the button on a breezy late summer Sunday morning, and you’re bound to convince more than just a few videographers to get out of bed early.

We picked up a few of the best videos of the implosion of the Tulip Hotel on Strand Street.

1. FULL MONTY: IMPLOSION VIDEO FROM BO-KAAP/SIGNAL HILL
Simple and straightforward. Ella Street in Bo-Kaap proved to be an excellent location to get a ‘full monty’ video of the implosion of the Tulip Hotel. Once uploaded on Vine, it received over 25 000 views within the hour and 35 000 views on Sunday alone.

2. SPLIT UP VINE VIDEO OF THE IMPLOSION AND ‘MUSHROOM’
Seven seconds. That’s all that the social media video app Vine gives you. Perhaps inspired by Youssou ‘n'dour and Neneh Cherry’s iconic song, ‘7 seconds’, the sliver of time means that you need to cut and paste slices of footage if you want to show the full story, like say the Tulip Hotel implosion as well as the mushroom cloud that it eventually [after 7 seconds] generated.

3. BIRD’S EYE: DRONE VIDEO OF THE TULIP HOTEL IMPLOSION
Excellent drone footage shot by Anton Schutte of SkyEye DroneWorx, known by many as DJ Kingsize. The Enya backtrack brings it home.

4. COMPILATION: GREAT EDITED VIDEO OF CAPE TOWN TULIP HOTEL IMPLOSION.
Mike Eloff (the illustrious ‘@theLawry’ on Instagram) shot this footage as part of his daily Youtube channel  ‘Life of Mike’. This video was shot with a GoPro Hero3+ Black (wider shot), Canon 7D (handheld so a little shaky) and the iPhone6 (slow motion).
