Road Closures Scheduled in Cape Town for IPL Parade
An introductory parade for the Indian Premier League will happen on Thursday 16 April in Cape Town
The much-anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) will kick off at Newlands cricket stadium on 18 April. To introduce the teams to the residents of Cape Town, a ticker tape parade will be held in the central city on Thursday 16 April from 14:00 to 16:30.
The parade will consist of 10 floats interspersed with different groups from the Cape Town Minstrels. The floats will represent each of the eight teams taking part, the IPL itself and Bollywood.
Executive Deputy Mayor Grant Haskin will greet and send off the procession at the City Hall, and the parade’s focus will then move to along Adderley Street and Heerengracht, and the public are encouraged to gather here.
To enable the parade to take place a number of roads will be closed:
• Keizersgracht between Tennant Street and Sir Lowry Road/Darling Street - from 12:00 – 16:00
• Darling Street between Sir Lowry Road and Adderley Street - from 12:00 – 16:00
• Sir Lowry Road between Tennant and Darling Streets – from 12:00 – 16:00
• Parade Street between Darling Street & Longmarket Street - from 00:00 -16:00
• All roads leading into Darling Street – between 12:00 – 16:30
• Adderley Street between Darling Street and Hertzog Boulevard – between 12:00 – 16:30
• All roads leading into Adderley Street and Heerengracht – between 12:00 – 16:30
• Hertzog Boulevard between Heerengracht and Civic Road – both carriageways between 12:00 – 16:30.
“Every effort will be made to minimise delays and the public are requested to exercise patience and caution to ensure that this parade is held safely. Strand Street and Hans Strijdom Avenue will remain open for cross flow traffic for as long as possible in order to alleviate congestion,” says Chief Inspector Merle Lourens, media spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services.
