Premiership League Fans to Swap Cars for Shuttle Buses

City encourages use of public transport during PSL games at Cape Town Stadium

Ticket holders for the eagerly anticipated Premiership League double-header, on Friday 27 August 2010, are advised to make use of the cities public transport system.

The transport system, which proved highly successful during the 2010 FIFA World Cup entitles ticket holders to free access to rail, shuttle services and special trains. Regular public transport systems will operate including; Cape Town rail station and mini bus taxis, which are all in close proximity to Cape Town Stadium and the Fan Walk.

 

The following transport options are available:

Rail

Most have park-and-ride facilities, free parking 24/7 and the following stations will have additional security:

Athlone: To the East of Athlone rail Station.

Ottery:  On either side of Ottery rail station, with primary parking on the eastern side of Panton Road.

Claremont: To the east of Claremont rail station, off Palmyra Road.

Retreat: West of Retreat rail station, with access from Main Road.

Fish Hoek: At Fish Hoek rail station, with additional parking at the eastern end of the beach parking area. A nominal parking fee may apply.

Century City: The Ratanga Junction parking area, with a shuttle service to the Century City rail station. Parking fee of R20 per vehicle.

Oostersee: At the station of Mike Peinaar Boulevard in Oostersee Street.

Brackenfell: Either side of the Brackenfell rail station with access of both Old Paarl Road and Brackenfell Boulevard. Additional security will only be provided for the northern parking area, off Old Paarl Road.

Goodwood: Grandwest. A nominal parking fee in applicable.

Kuils River: Either side of Kuils River rail station. Access available via Nooiesfontein Drive or Van Riebeek Road, off Station Road.

Strand: At the Strand rail station or at the municipal offices, across the road.

Mitchells Plain: At the Mitchells Plain rail station, off Hazeldene Avenue.



Road based park and ride facilities

These facilities are situated at the University of Cape Town (Rondebosch), Krondal, Primary School (Hout Bay) and Maiden’s  Cove (Camps Bay). Additional security available three hours before the start of the event and half an hour after the last shuttle from Cape Town has arrived.

Event Shuttles

Shuttles will operate on event days only. The Cape Town shuttle will leave from the Civic Bus Station via Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town; and finally to the Stadium bus station, in Western Boulevard, Green Point. The shuttles will operate from three house before, until two hours after the event and will depart every 15 minutes, or when full. The shuttle service is free of charge on presentation of a valid event ticket.

The Hout Bay shuttle will leave from Kronedal Primary School via Maiden’s Cove (Camps Bay), to the Civic Centre bus station. The service will use the following stops: Kronedal Primary School and Maiden’s Cove bus stop on Victoria Road. The service will operate three hours before until two hours after the event and will depart every 30 minutes, or when full.

The UCT, Upper Campus shuttle will depart from the University of Cape Town, Rondebosch, for the Civic Centre bus station. The service will use the following stops: UCT Sports Centre at the Northern end of the campus and the Intersection of Ring Road and University Avenue at the southern end of the campus. The shuttles will operate from three house before, until two hours after the event and will depart every 30 minutes, or when full.

Non-motorized transport

Fan Walk:
The Fan Walk between Cape Town rail station and Cape Town Stadium will be operational and spectators and fans are encouraged to ‘take the walk’.

Cycling: Lock-up facilities are available at Cape Town Stadium and those wishing to cycle to and from the event are encouraged to do so. The City asks that cyclists have adequate lighting and wear reflective clothing.

Road closures

The following road closures will have an impart of the traffic and motorists are advised to plan their trips accordingly:

Western Boulevard, between the stadium and Buitengracht will have one lane reserved for the shuttle service, from 16:00-23:00.

Hans Strijdom, from Long Street to Buitengracht, will have lane restrictions from 16:00-18:00.


Hertzog Boulevard, from Civic Road to Adderley Street, will be closed from 16:00-18:00, which will impact on access to the underground parking between the Civic and Standard Bank Centres.

On Granger Bay Boulevard, the lane on the stadium side with links the Western Boulevard to Beach Road, will be closed from 16:00-23:30.

Sommerset Road, between Ebenezer Road and Buitengracht, will be closed from 22:30 – 00:00.

Parking

Parking restrictions will be enforced in residential areas adjacent to Cape Town Stadium, from 06:00-00:00 and there is limited parking at Cape Town Stadium – advanced tickets must be purchased through Computicket.
