A sleek, late-night Korean steakhouse on Bree Street

Korean steak and small plates, soju and a slick happy hour

Last updated: Tuesday, 28 April 2026

Neon lights, leather booths and a steady pulse of music set the tone at Maru Korean Steakhouse. This sleek, Seoul-inspired restaurant and bar pairs Korean steak and small plates with a standout soju bar and drinks menu designed to keep the night going. There’s also a daily Magic Hour and a Saturday fried chicken and bubbles special that keeps tables busy well into the afternoon.

MARU KOREAN STEAKHOUSE BY PAN COLLECTION

On Bree Street, expectations for restaurants are high. You either cut it or you don’t: This address has already seen La Parada, Boma, and now, Maru, which has already staked its claim.

Maru Korean Steakhouse comes in with an advantage. It’s part of the PAN Collection, the group behind some of Cape Town’s best restaurants like Iron Steak & Bar, Burger & Lobster, Yatai, Scala, Hacienda, and Nikkei.

Inside, black stone counters and dim amber lighting set the late-night tone, while neon signage pulls focus to the bar and open grill. It’s a sleek, late-night atmosphere, with a steady pulse of house and hip-hop in the background, reminiscent of Seoul.

KOREAN STEAKHOUSE IN CAPE TOWN

It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a date as it does for a table of six ordering shared plates. The menu features grass-fed cuts, like shortrib, ribeye and Wagyu (all halaal), which are served on a sharing plate with kimchi, diced daikon radish, tteokbokki (rice cakes) and egg soufflé.

CRISPY FRIED CHICKEN & SMALL PLATES

Then there’s the Korean fried chicken, which easily holds its own. Made with pasture-raised chicken, it’s coated in a gluten-free batter and double-fried for a proper crunch that’s still light and not greasy. Choose between a soy garlic or gochujang glaze (sweet and spicy).

For something lighter, the small plates are a modern twist on Korean comfort dishes. Bibimbap (rice, marinated beef, and seasoned vegetables), croquettes with yuja aioli and gochujang ketchup, and sesame prawn toast with ssamjang sauce (a savoury and slightly spicy dipping sauce) are on the menu.

It’s an absolute must-try. Image: Maru Korean Steakhouse

PLAYFUL COCKTAILS ON BREE STREET

While the food tends to steal the show, the drinks are well worth visiting for (and very easy to order another round). You’ve got Korean-inspired spins on the classics, like Blood, Sweat and Tears, a margarita-esque tequila and gochujang drink that’s spicy, citrusy and not shy.

The Gangnam Spritz mixes Aperol with a subtle Sichuan buzz, and Chk Chk Boom takes on the espresso martini with cold brew, Kahlua and sesame.

You’ll definitely find yourself ordering another round. Image: Maru Korean Steakhouse

FUN K-POP COCKTAILS

Then the K-pop section is as fun as it sounds. Think strawberry cocktails with cherry boba, yuzu-infused sake drinks, and names like Playing With Fire and Dance the Night Away that feel very on-brand for a Bree Street night out.

Of course, soju runs through everything. You’ll find it in cocktails, on its own, or ordered for the table. And if you’re not drinking, the zero alcohol options aren’t an afterthought. Drinks like Secret of the Swan (lychee, hibiscus, sparkling grape) still feel like part of the bar experience.

BUBBLES, BUCKETS & HAPPY HOUR SPECIALS

At Maru one drink can easily turn into three. Magic Hour (daily from 4pm to 5.30pm) brings 50% off selected bubbles, wine and beer on tap, making it an easy after-work stop on Bree Street.

On Saturdays (12pm to 4pm), you can order a bucket of Korean fried chicken for R399 and receive a complimentary bottle of Zardetto Prosecco for two  with a DJ set running through the afternoon.

It’s easy to see why you might stay longer than you intended. On a street that moves quickly, Maru is the kind of spot you’ll come back to.

Whether it’s for Korean steak, fried chicken or just drinks that turn into dinner, Maru fits easily into a Bree Street night out. Image: Maru Korean Steakhouse
