Pay your final respects in Cape Town
Last Update 5 April 2017
Cape Town remembers Ahmed Kathrada with a memorial service taking place Thursday, 6 April 2017 from 2pm until 3.30pm. The Mother City is said to hold a dear place for Kathrada’s life of struggle, service and sacrifice.
Kathrada was imprisoned alongside former President Nelson Mandela on Robben Island, and later in his life became a full-time resident in the city where he lived with his wife, also a struggle veteran, Barbara Hogan. The memorial service will celebrate the life and legacy of the late leader Kathrada, with a keynote speech from former Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.
There will also be speeches by the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town Thabo Makgoba, Robben Island Veteran Eddie Daniels, Sheikh Igshaan Taliep(fro the United Ulema Council of South Africa), Vuyiseka Dubula (Africa Centre for HIV Management), Phumeza Mlungwana (Social Justice Coalition), Sarita Pillay (Ndifuna Ukwazi) and others.
The official event page says that, “This gathering is a moment for civil society and Cape Town residents to organise and adopt a program for mass action."
Time: 2pm - 3.30pm
