After 20 years of being hosted in conjunction with the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the event formerly known as the Cape Town Cycle Tour MTB Challenge has been handed over to the Pedal Power Association to organise. It’s being reimagined as the Cape Town MTB Challenge.
The race takes place on 29 February 2020 at the Old Bethlehem Farm in Kylemore, Stellenbosch, which sits on the Banhoek Conservancy and served as the MTB challenges’ home until 2013.
GOING THE DISTANCE
The race offers three distances: 15km, 30km and 60km. It caters for all fitness levels, is open for E-Bikes, and has elevations of 236m (15km), 466m (30km) and 1886m (60km). PPA and non-PPA members are welcome. This year’s prize money adds up to R30 000 and will be awarded to the winners in each distance category.
BEYOND THE MOUNTAIN BIKING
Bike parking facilities will be available for post-race bike storage, which allows participants to enjoy the post-race perks at the venue. Seattle Coffee will be there to provide a caffeine fix, plus you can stop by the other vendors for pancakes, wine, beer, ice cream, clothing and more. Bikes4All will set up a BMX track for the kids to practise their skills while parents enjoy live entertainment.
ENTERING THE MTB CHALLENGE
Entry costs R170 for the 15km, R250 for the 30km and R350 for the 60km. PPA members save R100 on their entry for any distance. E-Bikes get a separate timing category and results can’t be used for seeding in other events.
