Char’d Grill & Wine Bar is famous for its unusual meat cuts and dry and wet aged cuts (like the bavette); mad-scientist decor; and thoughtful details, like the gin atomiser and 1920s telephone, which create an inventive experience. What's the experience you're going to love? That's for you to say, what we can suggest is, as a first-timer at Char’d, is the meat appreciation platter.
Char’d has a sophisticated industrial feel. Image: Char’d Grill & Wine Bar
Char’d Grill is like a mix between a classic family steakhouse and retro-futuristic steampunk. The decor is inspired by 19th-century industrial, steam-powered machinery, with steam pipes, retro-lighting and an old telephone (that still works, ask your waiter). In the spirit of mad-scientist vibes, there’s also an interactive gin-tasting experience with a gin atomiser, used to provide scents and tasters.
The atomiser is a really unique detail that’s both fun to use and educational. Image: Char’d Grill & Wine Bar
The real star of the show is Char’d Grills dry-age glass room. It’s visible from every corner of the restaurant and filled with artisanal meats. It reflects the care and preparation that goes into each cut, all of which are dry-aged and butchered on site.
Waiters come to the table with a tray full of traditional dry-aged beef walks you through the size and flavour profile of each cut. Image: Char’d Grill
Have you ever heard of the skirt steak cut? What about the flank or hanger? These often-overlooked cuts have an interesting flavour profile – try them with the meat appreciation platter, if you’re curious.
The platter comes with three pieces of the chef’s selection of dry- and wet-aged beef, and includes one unique cut as well as 2 more commonly used cuts like sirloin or ribeye. Sides include hearty bone marrow, garlic rolls, onion rings and fries. 3 of our team members shared it, along with some extra dishes on the side.
There are loads of small plate options that you can order as extras with the platter. Image: Char’d Grill & Wine Bar
Along with the vast amount of meat cuts on offer, Char’d has other inventive menu options, too. The trendy burgers are a must-try, from the Cheese Fondue to the Skud Jou Brisket. There’s even a burger named after President Cyril. Locals also love the pork belly mac-and-cheese and Caveman Rib, which was another winner in our team’s eyes. Plus, there are some sizzling vegan/vegetarian options, from the Fungi Burger to smokey corn ribs.
Sides are ordered separately. Image: Char’d Grill & Wine Bar
