As South Africa’s first frozen yoghurt, Marcel’s is accustomed to challenging perceptions. It was the original Mzansi alternative to ice cream when it launched in Stellenbosch over 25 years ago, and now over two decades later, it’s still looking to make magic in ways that may seem a little left of centre.
For one, it recently gave fans the task of naming a new flavour in its #MySummerSwirl crowdsourced social media competition, good-naturedly accepting even the most absurd suggestions (think blue cheese and chicken). Not to mention, its finished product range, which includes 1-L and 175-mL anytime tubs and 150mL wrapped chocolate-coated frozen yoghurt on a stick, are changing the way most people assume they can enjoy what’s traditionally been a soft-serve snack.
The convenient take-home treats are available in an assortment of flavours (think favourites like English Toffee, Chocolate and Turkish Delight) from supermarkets and 24-hour convenience shops, and in true Marcel’s manner, they all channel the smooth, creamy mouth feel the frozen yoghurt maven is famous for.
So, in the spirit of the brand’s knack for the novel, we’ve teamed up with their ambassador Liezel van der Westhuizen, a super bachelorette who still manages to slot a few Marcel’s moments into her busy schedule, to dream up some unusual things that you can do with the FroYo tubs and sticks to make life better.
Now go enjoy!
8 UNUSUAL THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH MARCEL’S FROZEN YOGHURT THAT WILL MAKE YOUR LIFE BETTER
1. Have it for brekkie. After all, frozen yoghurt is low fat, and as Marcel’s reduced their fat content from 5% to 2.4% in recent years, there’s no reason not to shake up your wake up with something other than corn flakes. Add some fresh fruit to a few scoops from an anytime tub, and you’re good to go.
2. Use it to replace the kiddie crack at little ones’ bday celebrations. Swap out the cake, sweeties, biscuits and cupcakes for Marcel’s wrapped desserts or anytime tubs. The FroYo is considerably healthier, and more importantly, it won’t create a maniacal sugar-crazed child monster.
3. Have a ‘Martha Stewart weekend’ with it. In other words, channel the craft guru and use the leftover sticks from the wrapped treats to add some finesse to your life. The kids can make DIY bookmarks with the little wooden bits, or you can use them to label veggies in your garden.
4. Let it help you keep balanced. Marcel’s is jam-packed with a unique strain of BB-12 probiotic cultures. This friendly bacteria helps maintain a happy environment within your gastrointestinal system and can even boost your immune system.
5. Smooth out snacky hunger pains with a smoothie. There are a million recipes out there, but we’re big fans of the Marcel’s Vanilla with banana, a bit of fresh ginger and a dash of honey. Liezel, on the other hand, recommends a berry watermelon smoothie (recipe below).
6. Make it your go-to festival food or a beach picnic staple. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to realise that Marcel’s small anytime tubs and wrapped range are the perfect cooler box companions. So swap out the six-pack for a couple of FroYos and hit the road.
7. Penelope Cruz your standard Don Pedro. That means that instead of using ice cream and liquor to make a naughty after-dinner combination, sub in frozen yoghurt. It’s way sexier.
8. Marry Marcel’s to Marie and, voilá, make an awesome ice cream sandwich. Liezel claims there’s no better summer dessert than a bit of Marcel’s Chocolate between two Marie biscuits, and we’re tempted to agree. The little ones will love the combo too, which is already a win!
