One Night Only: Jelly Night at the Two Oceans Aquarium

I don’t think you are ready for this jelly

Jelly fish are fish right? Wrong! They are boneless, soft-bodied aquatic animals that are better known as jellies. On Tuesday, 10 October 2017 The Two Oceans Aquarium is hosting a night dedicated to these soft squishies.

For those who are not familiar with the Jelly Night, it is an exhibition of majestic aquatic species at the the Jelly Gallery in the Two Oceans Aquarium. This year, Marine Biology Professor Mark Gibbons and Aquarist Krish Lewis will be taking us on a colourful journey like no other. Krish is the resident jelly guy at the Two Oceans Aquarium; he knows all that needs to be known about these jellies helps them grow.

South Africa’s coastlines support both warm and cold currents, enabling us to cultivate a diverse ecosystem. We have over 1 000 known jellies on our coast, making the Two Oceans Aquarium rich in marine life. As you enter the aquarium’s dedicated Jelly Gallery, you will have front row seats to the ever growing sea life.

“In the open oceans, some 2 000 species of jellies pulsate with life as they drift with the ocean currents. The variety of designs and the luminescent colours of these otherworldly creatures will astound even the most fertile of imaginations,” Prof Gibbons, who hails from the University of Western Cape (UWC), says.

Krish has always had a fascination with animals, he studied Marine Biology at the UWC, under Professor Gibbons. Not only does Krish overlook the day to day runnings of the Jelly Gallery, but he is a specialist in his field, hence the nickname ‘jelly guy’.

Jellies have been free-swimming for over 500 million years, and have to be the oldest living organisms in the ocean. They are vibrant in colour and change brightness over tropical coastal zones. Be sure not to miss these creatures at the one night only Jelly Night exhibition.
