Must see: This spectacular feat of nature as a humpback whale does a high jump completely out the water
Whale season is just around the corner… and this massive creature brings it in with a thrilling performance. South Africa's whale season is starting to take off and soon along the West Coast you will spot whale pods as they wow spectators with their formidable presence mere metres off the coastline. Enjoy this video, which serves as a stark reminder of how winter in South Africa still beats even a summer’s day in London.
Here the bus-length mother whale travels with her baby, which will nurse for a year. Humpbacks are known for their singing ability, which can be heard for miles across the ocean, but taking their enormous bodies out the water is simply a breathtaking sight for us spectators.
The humpback’s tail fin, known as the fluke, has enormous power and the ability to propel the whale forwards and upwards. Whether breaching is done for a special reason or just for fun, this new level of catupulting makes for out-of-this-world viewing.
Not only do whales inhabit one of the world's most popular viewing spots on the West Coast, Hermanus, but South Africa's Eastern Cape (Indian Ocean) also has it's fair share of these mighty creatures. The reasons to visit Cape Town, even in the winter are endless.
