Hermanus Country Market

5 good reasons to go

Hermanus’ Country market (every Saturday) is one of the loveliest Western Cape weekend experiences. So much so it's worth making the trip even if you’re not based in the town. You can sit outdoors under the trees, listen to music, drink gorgeous wine from the area (it’s close to the Hemel en Aarde valley, remember) and eat delicious food at long, convivial tables. Here are five good reasons to go.

1. IT’S A GREAT VIBE

On Saturdays, Hermanus locals head to the market and people connect. The locals are warm and helpful and chatty, and they’ll tell you what you shouldn’t miss out on. Feel free to ask for recommendations for food, drinks and delicious things worth taking home.

You’ll find plenty of wooden crafts there, including these items made out of old wine barrels. Image: Capetownmagazine.com

Most stalls fronts are made of wood and in between them are paths of wood chips (do wear shoes) – it’s all very neat. There’s shade-cloth covering in some areas, so you can stay out of the sun, and the breeze blows through, keeping things cool. Plus there’s always a DJ, and what’s better than an outdoor lunch with music (and good wine)?

2. EAT (& DRINK) WITH THE LOCALS

You’ll find loads of options: pizza, sandwiches, Asian cuisine, sushi, hotdogs (of course), hamburgers, pampoenkoekies (pumpkin fritters), wraps of all kinds – including vegan options – pancakes and beautiful fresh oysters (there’s always a queue for these).

Hermanus being close to the Hemel en Aarde valley means you’ll find excellent wines at the market, but also craft beer and sparkling wine. Long tables have been set up so you can eat in a convivial, communal atmosphere, and it’s open-air and there’s plenty of space.

3. KEEP A LOCAL MAKER GOING

There are lots of craftspeople or makers, and they’re always happy to tell you in detail about their products. You’ll find beautiful wooden goods made out of old wine barrels, as well as sturdily crafted standing lights, unique homemade cordials, delicious cured meats and home-baked goods (including amazing breads) and cheeses.

These homemade cordials are unique and quite exquisite, the perfect gift for a foodie

There’s a strong organic presence, and you’ll find farm-fresh eggs through to flowers and a huge range of seasonal vegetables.

4. WATCH A PUPPET SHOW

This is the perfect outing for the whole family – dogs included (on a leash, please). For little ones, there’s a wonderful puppet show and other entertainment, as well as a jungle gym.

Here’s another little secret: there are some wattle trees in the middle of the area and there are quite often owls sitting in there, contentedly.

5. SHOP AHEAD FOR BIRTHDAY GIFTS

Commission a painting of his dog for your brother or your sister’s parrot (or pony). Buy beautiful jewellery, or the most exquisite creatures shaped out of driftwood.

You’ll also find clothing, from exquisitely sewn children’s gingham smocks to beautifully tailored dresses made out of bold African prints and floaty sun dresses.

If you’re not around Hermanus, there are some other markets worth the drive in and around Cape Town.

There’s a lot going on in this little town. Here’s the lowdown on what to do in Hermanus.

The town has no shortage of accommodation, but here’s one with a great special on.
