5 of the zaniest things people have done in Cape Town

Extreme skateboarding, car spinning and hair raising balancing acts

Do you remember the time when a Cape Town skateboarder set off a speeding camera on Kloof Nek road? Or, the dare-devil base-jumper who miss-judged his flight down Table Mountain? We do, and it was awesome.

Just because we’re in lockdown, doesn't mean we can't bask in the zaniest Cape Town memories.

TOO FAST FOR CAPE TOWN’S TRAFFIC DEPARTMENT
On 20 January 2013 South African skateboarder Decio Lourenco flew down Kloof Nek Road. Not only did he dodge the oncoming traffic but he managed to set off a 60km/h speeding camera on his way down.

PREPARE TO FEEL CAR SICK
Kaylin 'Kayla' Oliphant is one of South Africa's top female car spinners. Her top stunt of tightly weaving in and around barrels and hanging upside-down out the driver's window is an epic sight that makes the crowds go wild.

WHO’S FASTER, A CYCLIST OR AN OSTRICH?
When cycling through the Cape of Good Hope a group of cyclists never would have thought their biggest competition would be a giant male ostrich.

A BALANCING ACT 1000M ABOVE CAPE TOWN
A lot of Capetonians will go to great lengths to get a good view of the sunrise. However, professional slackliner, Lukas Irmler, has put us all to shame. In June 2011 Lukas walked across a 23m slackline in Table Mountain, at the perfect time to catch the sunrise.

EXTREME ATHLETE JEB CORLISS’S HIT AND MISS MOMENT
Extreme athlete Jeb Corliss made headlines around the world when he missed coordinated his jump from the top of Table Mountain in 2012. Luckily for Jeb, he had a full recovery and took on Table Mountain again in 2019.

CHASING THE SUN
Watch as a longboarder and a rollerblader glide down a public road in Cape Town just at the right time to catch the sunrise.

When was the first time you doing proper long range (>1km)? tell me your story :) haha Mine is simple. To this day, this was the first time I hit the 1.8km range. This was challenging for many reasons: legality, safety of people I fly with, safety of people I could encounter during the flight and of course pushing (my own) limits Why is it we're all in this for? All FPV pilots are adrenaline addicts, I definitely am and what I like even more is pushing my limits. Not all pilots are into that though, I think that's more down to personality and everyone's need of exploration. Exploring the world is one thing, I love that too but what I think the true exploration in life is... to me, that's exploring ourselves and getting to know who we are. When I stay in my comfort zone, I'm bored. When I get out of it, I'm shivering and that's what excites me the most: seeing where I can go and what I can possibly do So here we are, it's 5:30am in Cape Town, South Africa. I am with @k1ng_muk @nicky.taylor_ and they're about to ride for the sunrise. Timing is critical as we only have one shot to get it right as we don't want to miss the sunrise. It's a cloudy day but we're hopeful to catch it. The ride starts on a bet as it's still cloudy but the end of the ride gets the colours I was hoping for. Imagine my face behind the goggles when I start seeing the sun rays in my goggles while I'm following them and standing 1.3km away: I had a big smile on my face. Such a beautiful way to start a day if you wonder where I'm standing, you can see me on the left side of the road at the beginning of the video This was my story, here's the flight of that story of the time I pushed the range to what's to this day the further away I've flown to; now share with me yours? The time you push the range on your quad or the time you pushed your own limits
