Enjoy a serene sampling experience in Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs

Fancy sampling sterling vintages amidst breathtaking surrounds but a hop, skip and a jump away from central Cape Town? Forego trekking out to faraway estates and instead make the short trip to De Grendel, a historic farm that rests in the Durbanville Wine Valley only 15 minutes from the Mother City’s CBD. The scenic Northern Suburbs spot is open for wine tasting seven days a week, including public holidays (the only exceptions are Good Friday, Christmas Day and January 1), with no booking required.

Perched at a perfect grape-growing altitude on the lush slopes of Tygerberg Hill, the winery, which is owned by the locally acclaimed Graaff family, creates top-notch whites, rich reds, a crisp Rosé and an elegant MCC Brut. While all the creations in the estate’s collection are exceptional, the gifted winemakers’ current pride and joy is their buttery, cherry-driven Pinot Noir and their Chardonnay, both of which received prestigious awards in early 2016.

Visitors can opt to sip and swirl any three wines from their premium range, for a mere R30, or can try out all of the outstanding current vintages of premium wines for R50. Their flagship wines is also available to taste for R60 or R20 per wine.

Sampling can be done under the guidance of highly knowledgeable staff in the winery’s chic new tasting centre, which comprises a cosy indoor area and a large alfresco patio that looks out over verdant vineyards, a sparkling dam and a spectacular silhouette of Table Mountain. Alternatively, those enjoying a meal at De Grendel’s fine in-house restaurant – it also boasts captivating views – can taste wines at their table for gratis.

No matter where guests choose to please their palates though, one fact remains: there are few better places than De Grendel to enjoy a sip and swirl session so close to Cape Town and yet so seemingly far from everything else.

Price of wine tasting at De Grendel

As mentioned, at the Tasting Lounge and Stoep, guests can taste any three wines in their premium wines category for R30 or the full range of premium wines for R50. Guests can also taste their range of flagship wines for R60 or R20 per wine. The tasting room is open between 9am and 5pm from Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm on Saturday and between 10am and 4pm Sunday.
