Unusual things to do for Easter in Cape Town

Not your typical plans. Candle concert, (free) light art, game drive & more

Whether you celebrate Easter or not, there are plenty of things to do over the long weekend. We’ve included egg hunts and family Easter festivals of course, but if you’re looking for something different, there’s also a safari getaway (only one hour from Cape Town), comedy night filled with legendary local comics, free magical light art exhibition, candlelit concert, high tea with hot cross buns, and more.

WEEKEND OF MUSIC, TREES AND OFF-GRID FUN 

Reforest Fest is a tree-planting festival first, where thousands of indigenous trees are planted over Easter weekend but it’s also so much more. You’ll wander between laughter yoga, incense making workshops, and curated wine tastings. There’s also live music, silent discos and glamping. Here’s all you need to know about Reforest Fest 2026.

EASTER SURPRISES & A R5K HAMPER

Special treats like chocolates, vouchers and surprises are hidden in HintHunt’s escape rooms when you book over the long weekend. On Easter Sunday, their mission room (different to the regular escape room) ups the stakes – the fastest team of the day wins a R5 000 Easter hamper packed with goodies at Bomb Time, HintHunt’s new mission room

EASTER EGG HUNT UNDER R100   

Kids aged 2 to 13 get 60 minutes to follow a map through the wildlife sanctuary at Intaka Island in Century City, searching for clues along the way on this easter scavenger hunt. Keep your eyes peeled for Captain Feathers if you're lucky enough to spot them! There is a special face painting station courtesy of Property World, Century City.

LIGHT ART WALK

It’s that time of the year again where you can stroll along winding paths through vineyards and riverbanks as immersive artworks flicker, pulse and surprise around every corner at Spier. Entry is free (booking essential), but it’s worth arriving early to enjoy a picnic or dinner before walking along the illuminated trail at Spier Light Art 2026.

CANDLELIGHT CONCERT

Thousands of LED candles set the scene for this intimate live music experience. A string quartet performs a mashup of hits from Coldplay and Ed Sheeran, turning familiar songs into something cinematic and atmospheric at Norval Foundation.

EASTER HUNTS AT A HERITAGE SITE

Long March to Freedom has 100 life-size statues of heroes from South Africa and abroad that tell an inspiring story of our fight for democracy. They’re running an Easter combo where a family of four pays just R120 for a guided tour. If you visit on Sunday, kids can also join a big egg hunt included with your R20 entry ticket (SA residents only, self-guided).

COFFEE & HOT CROSS BUN SPECIAL

Set right on Onrus Lagoon, this laidback beach spot is all about easy meals with a view. Their hot cross bun and coffee combo is the kind of easy, feel-good Easter treat you grab between beach dips and lazy lunches when you visit Milk on the Beach

COMEDY NIGHT IN OBSERVATORY 

Hosted by Yaaseen Barnes, Crown Comedy brings together a mix of local heavyweights and rising stars, including Pichi Keane, Maria Ings, Khanyisile Ngwenya, Nishen Pather, Alex Dreyden, Taffy-Mukono, and TQ. In between acts, The Duchess keeps things flowing with cocktails, wine, and bar bites.

STEAKS & SWEET TREATS

If steak is your love language, this steakhouse is a must-visit. Dry-aged in-house and seared to perfection, their cuts, from flat iron to caveman rib, are the main attraction. And for Easter, they’re adding a caramel citrus mousse topped with a marshmallow-and-mango gel Easter egg, finished with ginger and chocolate soil for dessert at Char’d in Hermanus

PICKLED FISH WITH A TWIST

This tiny seaside bistro by the Hermanus Waterfront is known for its fresh, creative plates and ocean views. For Easter, they’re serving kingklip pickled fish with sweet onions, curry spices and garlic ciabatta. It’s a refined twist on the classic dish and just the kind of inventive dish you’ll find at Pear Tree

BREE STREET’S BEST BAR 

If your Easter plans lean more towards cocktails than chocolate eggs, fable is one of the most playful places to spend a night out. SAFARI DAY TRIP IDEA

What better way to celebrate Easter than with a day trip or weekend away? West Coast Safaris is only an hour away from Cape Town, where a guided game drive takes you up close to giraffes, buffalo, springbok, and even rare golden wildebeest (9am and 2pm slots available). Hot cross buns, pickled fish, Easter pastries and sweet treats await when you book this seasonal high tea at Hazendal Wine Estate. Hosted at Mark’s restaurant, the experience is paired with smooth live jazz for an elegant afternoon out.
