The AfroFest: An Ode to African Culture

1 continent, 3 days, 18 venues; From Congo to Cape Town

The AfroFest wants to change the way we celebrate being African this Heritage Month, and they’re doing so with a city-wide cultural fiesta that will take you on a journey of exciting discoveries in our beloved city. On both the Friday and Saturday of the Heritage Day weekend, Friday, 22 and Saturday, 23 September 2017, AfroFest will take over the city and ignite the spirit of Africa!

The organisers are a mix of different nationalities and are all linked by a passionate love for the culture, music, art, fashion, food and design that comes out of Mother Africa and her creative people. No two African nations are the same, and what better way to get to know our heritage than by learning about the continent we find ourselves on?

The festival gives Capetonians the opportunity to rediscover the city and enjoy new experiences that you might never have come across before. Local businesses with a particularly African offering will open their doors to the crowds and welcome them with traditional foods, products, music, art and fun, all in the name of The AfroFest! The festival will offer markets, fashion shows, craft demonstrations, live DJ performances, plenty of food and so much more.

AFRICAN PRODUCTS: The AfroFest have brought together the best collection of African-owned creative businesses in Cape Town. Between Design Afrika in Woodstock (with their finely crafted hand woven basketry and fabrics) and The Pan-African Market on Long Street (with their unending variety of African wares) you’ll be amazed at all the African products you didn’t know you could find. Also be sure to check out Noah Woodstock, Tarka, the Obz Lifestyle Market and Newtown.

THE TASTE OF AFRICA: A highlight of any festival is the food, and The AfroFest is definitely set to deliver. They have secured a variety of food vendors, and we’ve got the scoop. At Observatory Train Station you can get your hands on delectable Congolese and Nigerian cuisine from Elongama. For a little taste of home, head to Rise and Shine Café, also in Observatory, for some authentic and lekker eats, made from recipes that have been passed from generation to generation. Sample some delicious dishes at Jimmy Jimalo’s, The Meeting Point, Bebe Rose Restaurant, Madam Taitou (CBD) Know Thy Farmer (Oude Molen Village), Ivy’s Kitchen, Elongama, Timbuktu Cafe and Madam Taitou; you'll be able to find most of these in the Obz Lifestyle Market.

CITY-WIDE: The AfroFest will be present in the following areas: CBD, Tamboerskloof, Woodstock, Salt River, Observatory, Rosebank, Pinelands, Langa and Khayelitsha. The venues represent the true diversity of the African continent. The AfroFest wants to highlight how sensational African products, people and services are, and even better, you can get them right here in the Mother City!

AUTHENTIC TUNES: The music on offer at various venues across the city is reason on its own to become a part of the festivities. The venues include Oude Molen Eco-Village, Jimmy Jimalo’s, Mali South, Bebe Rose Restaurant The Melting Pot on ERF 81, Panafrican Market, Meeting Point, Jimmy Jimalo's, Mali South, March of Time, Chez Ntemba, Newtown, Voom Voom and many more. The artists include Vukuhambe, African Rhythm, Verlain Aken Fils de l'Aigle, Sylvester Kabassidi, Mapumba, Mkhuhu, Mike Makwerhu, Sisanda Myataza, and more!

STYLE FROM HOME: If you’re looking for a new ‘do, the Obz Salon is the place for you. Head over there during the festival and mention to the lovely Nannette that you are part of the festivities, and she will give you access to a special hair design made especially for The AfroFest! Looking for some new locally made threads? Then spend some time at WAG, Fashion Silueta, The Pan-African Market or Mali South.

There are plenty of other activities to check out and enjoy, and you can browse them on The AfroFest website,

There is no cost to enjoying the festival, but most of the activities infer a separate charge. If you have any questions or queries, or you’d like to see a map of the festival, you can visit the website listed above, or contact them directly on +27 (0)82 751 2898 or email them [email protected].
