The current exhibition at the South African Jewish Museum (SAJM) is truly unique as it’s accessible to everyone, including the blind community. Johannesburg-based artist Susan Woolf began this project nine years ago, and now her multi-sensory exhibition Taxi Hand Signs is on display at SAJM until Sunday, 4 September 2016.
This art installation came about from Woolf’s inter-disciplinary exploration of the hand signals used by taxi drivers in Gauteng to communicate with commuters and each other. She wanted to delve into the nature of these hand signals as they are symbolic of the South African cultural landscape and are an effective tool for communicating intention to the drivers of approaching taxis.
The exhibition, comprising 14 pieces of art, forms a clear illustrative language that can be easily learned by people who are blind, allowing them to communicate effectively with taxi drivers. Each piece of art is both visual and tactile, and can be felt by the observer so that they can experience what blind people perceive through their sense of touch.
