Plus markets, fun runs and youth-led conversations (June 16)
The much anticipated final book in the Spud series, a collection written by South African author John van de Ruit, will launch at Reuben’s at the One & Only hotel in the V&A Waterfront on Monday, 13 August 2012.
Audience members are invited to sit down with both the acclaimed author and with emcee Aubrey Ngcungama from “Come Dine with Me SA” fame - both old boys of Michaelhouse - to a three-course menu from Reuben’s with wine pairings from Allée Bleue
“Spud - Exit, Pursued by a Bear” will be available for purchase on the day, and for those who haven’t read previous pieces in the series yet, all books are available for purchase from Exclusive Books. Don’t forget to bring your copies; John will be signing books through the day.
Booking is essential and can be made by contacting the restaurant reservations desk at the One & Only hotel on +27 (0) 21 431 4511 or emailing at restaurant.reservations@oneandonlycapetown.com. Tickets are R275p/p and include the meal at Reuben’s.
Note: For those unable to attend the book lunch at the One & Only, Spud book launches will also take place at the Book Lounge on Tuesday, 14 August and at Rondebosch Boys High School on Wednesday, 15 August 2012.
About the book
Spud - Exit, Pursued by a Bear is the fourth and final instalment in the much loved series about life in boarding school - in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands - through the eyes of the protagonist, John “Spud” Milton.
The adventures of the Crazy 8 gang, the eccentric characters at the boarding school, Spud’s tumultuous love life and his off-centre family have had readers in stitches and tears since 2005. After the commercial success in SA the series is now available in North America.
The film
In 2010, the film adaptation of Spud – shot at Michaelhouse, the Anglican Diocesan College of Natal, a boarding school for senior boys - was released with great success; the cast included Troy Sivan as John “Spud” Milton, John Cleese as Mr “The Guv” Edly and Tanit Phoenix as Mrs "Eve" Wilson. Production for Spud 2: The Madness Continues has already begun.
