Second Hand, Handmade and Hands On, At Low Prices In Wynberg

Explore over 115 stalls selling branded clothing, good food and Canna Coffee. Drop off your recycling and bring your dog to the Novalis Thrift Fest

Shop good-quality second-hand and hand-made items such as plants and pots, books and vinyl, and even get a massage, for crazy good prices at the Thrift Fest.

This shopping soirée happens at the Novalis Ubuntu Institute on the last Saturday of each month.

WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT STARTED
Laura Rainbird, an art school dropout, was looking for a revolutionary way to earn a living. In 2012, she started a Facebook group called "Second Hand," as a deep south trading, buying and selling group of 100 women. The group grew steadily (now 110000 strong) and in 2015, she made the group into a physical market – with real exchange, communication and contact. This is how the Thrift Fest (originally The official second-hand market) was born.

The market has been running monthly in various locations for about three years and has become the official market event of the Novalis Ubuntu Institute in Wynberg.

Rainbird wants to set up regular markets in different venues all over Cape Town as a way to reach all, giving everyone an opportunity to either buy or sell in their areas.

WHAT WILL YOU FIND THERE?
Everything at the Thrift Fest is second-hand and hand-made. You’ll find anything from clothing to plants, books, vinyl and you can even get a massage.

For entertainment, Thrift Fest introduces a new upcoming artist every month to feature as a live act for the event. In a city brimming with talent and an eclectic taste in music, artists and genres change every month.

REFRESHMENTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Take a break from shopping with some delicious food and drinks. The permanent food vendors whip up bites ranging from vegan and meat rotis, fresh juice, fried finger foods, halaal, shawarma (falafel and meat), boerewors and burgers as well as coffee and Canna Coffee (coffee infused with medical-grade CBD oil).

THE RECYCLING REVOLUTION
Thrift Fest is also a recycling drop-off point that accepts paper, glass, tin and plastic. New Earth Projects, who do the recycling, offer recycling services all over Cape Town and promote recycling and the process of upcycling plastics into education tools and toys via 3D printing. You can contact them on newearthprojects111@gmail.com, 072 193 8597 or 073 511 9859.

THE VENUE
Thrift Fest takes place at the Novalis Ubuntu Institute in Rosmead Avenue in Wynberg, an NPO that promotes the universal values of Ubuntu.

For Thrift Fest, the spacious hall with high ceilings houses regular stalls while the front garden accommodates the gazebo stalls. You can park right next to the venue in Rosmead Avenue. Dogs on leashes are welcome.

The venue also facilitates holistic education programmes to uplift local disadvantaged communities and serves as a community resource centre, providing events and other educational resources.

ENTRANCE TO THE MARKET
Entrance to the market is paid in cash at the gate at a rate of R10 for adults and R5 for kids under 12 years. Invite your friends and family and bring cash because there is no ATM. Gates open at 10:30am for customers and the market packs up at 3:30pm. For more information on future markets, follow @thriftfest on Instagram or Second Hand on Facebook.

BOOK YOUR STALL
The Novalis Thrift fest happens on the last Saturday of every month, so if you miss out, there’s always another opportunity. A stall is a great opportunity for anyone to turn good-quality used or hand-made items into cash. The space for a regular stall (1.9m x 1.3m) inside costs R200 while the space for a gazebo stall (3m x 3m) outside in the garden costs R320. You can hire a trestle table for R65.
