Saturday Breakfast at The Taproom

Make Saturday mid-morning memorable with a moreish bite and a brewery tour at the Devil’s Peak Brewing Company’s chic eatery

Woodstock has become one of Saturday's most popular shopping hotspots thanks to The Old Biscuit Mill's Neighbourgoods Market, The Palms bazaar in Sir Lowry’s Road and the multitude of antique stores dotting the sidewalks between each hangout.

It's a marathon of a market spree that gets spirits high and baskets full, but, like with any activity demanding long bouts of endurance, there will come a time when you'll want to call it a day, escape the crowd, rest your feet and reward yourself.

And there's no better place to do that than The Taproom, a craft beer and food fanatic's watering hole situated within Devil’s Peak Brewing Company on Durham Avenue – a mere stone's throw away from the market mayhem.

With its spacious, polished interior, soul-soothing view of Devil's Peak mountain and mouth-watering menu complemented by world-class ales on tap, the restaurant-cum-pub provides good reason to cut a stall-hopping session short or to wake up especially early to squeeze in breakfast before the market rush.

The brekkie offering, which is available from 8am to 11am, includes classics like eggs benedict (an English muffin topped with poached eggs, hash browns, gypsy ham and hollandaise sauce), french toast (with maple syrup, bacon and banana), homemade muesli with plain yoghurt and fruit and more.

If you'd prefer to forego such entrées and treat yourself to a lunch-type meal instead, you'll find more than enough to tickle your taste buds and indulge your appetite. The lunch menu, which is available from 12:00, has a tasty array of offerings. One great option is the Woodhead Pulled Pork Sandwich: a weighty ration of tender meat slow cooked in amber ale, wedged between artisan bread slices and served with pickled red onion, coriander cream and onion rings.

In the mood for seafood? Try the fresh hake wrapped in batter made with the brewery’s famous First Light Golden Ale. Otherwise, if you're feeling just a little peckish, give the Tap Dawg a go – it features a foot-long frankfurter atop a bed of caramelised onions inside a pretzel roll. And if you're vegetarian, do grab the luscious pizza with brown mushrooms, feta, rocket and truffle oil.

Of course, it goes without saying that the experience of dining alongside the steaming tanks of Devil's Peak Brewing Company would be incomplete without pairing your brunch with one of the brewery’s Founder or Explorer Series beers, all of which are served by the half or full pint. Better yet, order a taster tray and sample 100mL of each.

And if you wish to take your sampling experience to a whole new level, be sure to try out the company’s informative Saturday brewery tour. This excursion gives craft beer lovers and curious folk alike the chance to explore the realms of the beer-making world in a particularly unique way. Guests can witness the various stages of the ale production process and do everything from feel and chew the malt to watch the bottling procedure. There’s a tour that begins at 11am and another one at 2pm, and each expedition takes about 20 minutes. And the best part? The experience is absolutely FREE and no booking is necessary!

It’s another reason why with The Taproom in the hood, Woodstock has gotten even better. On that note, thanks to this vibey pub, so have Saturday market meanderings.

Note: No food is served at The Taproom between 11:00 (when breakfast ends) and 12:00 (when lunch begins).
